Byzantine Studies Exhibition is Waiting for You in Istanbul.
A valuable event in the field of culture and art is organized by Koç University Sevgi Gönül Center for Byzantine Studies (GABAM). The exhibition titled "The Adventure of Byzantine Studies in Turkey", which is a part of the Sixth International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium, takes you on a journey into the depths of history. The exhibition will open its doors to visitors at Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Research Center (ANAMED) until March 31, 2024.
The well-known Byzantine historian Assoc. Dr. Koray Durak and GABAM Projects Coordinator Merve Özkılıç. The exhibition, which is a special tribute to the centennial of the Republic of Turkey, delves into the multi-layered nature and institutionalization process of Byzantine studies in Turkey.
Presenting a chronological course starting from the Late Ottoman Period, the exhibition brings together various materials from rich archival documents to videos for the first time. It describes the institutionalization process of Byzantine studies in Turkey's history, covering the period from 1923 to the present. It also reveals the evolution of Byzantine studies in Turkey, starting with the establishment of history and art history departments at universities. In the exhibition, the contributions of the Greek community and collaborations with foreign institutions are also examined in a separate section.
The other part of the exhibition focuses on scientific meetings, past exhibitions, architectural research and museum studies, which have been increasing since the 1990s. In addition to important areas such as palaeography, epigraphy, sigilography and underwater archeology studies, architectural restorations are also presented in a visually rich way.
The exhibition also offers a striking perspective on the field of education and book enthusiasts. In the section where the Byzantine curriculum in secondary education is evaluated, children's books are also exhibited, inspiring the history buffs of the future.
In addition to the visual feast, the exhibition is also equipped with interactive elements. Thanks to the touch screens, the topics that gain importance in research and the relationship networks of scientists can be explored. In addition, a map showing Byzantine layers all over Turkey gives visitors a unique experience.
Video recordings from Koç University GABAM's "Oral History Project: Being a Byzantineist in Turkey" also enrich the exhibition. Interviews with leading experts of Byzantine studies in this project offer the audience a journey full of history.
The design of the exhibition “The Adventure of Byzantine Studies in Turkey” was done by Burak Şuşut, Dilara Tekin Gezginti and Duygu Güven from Fika. With the financial support of the Vehbi Koç Foundation and sponsored by Arçelik, the exhibition will be complemented by a book that presents the most comprehensive history of Byzantine studies in Turkey.
