Who is İsmail Burak Balcı? (1999-Istanbul)Born in Istanbul in 1999, İsmail Burak Balcı completed his undergraduate studies in the Painting Department of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University’s Faculty of Fine Arts between 2018 and 2022. During his undergraduate studies, he focused on contemporary art approaches, figurative narratives, and space-based fiction, developing a disciplined knowledge of both technical and conceptual aspects.Following graduation, Balcı continued his artistic work and also worked as an art instructor at various institutions, blending his pedagogical practice with his artistic knowledge. Focusing on themes such as the individual’s inner world, the relationship between city and space, belonging, social alienation, and the search for utopia, the artist combines figurative expression with symbolic layers and metaphorical structures to create a unique visual language.Balcı, who periodically shapes his artistic practice around specific conceptual axes, has four main series:His first series, “Rural Melancholy,” focused on rural memory, focusing on abandoned houses, empty buildings, and the phenomenon of migration during a year spent in rural Çanakkale. The works in this series demonstrate how an emotional connection to the past is shaped by emptiness and loneliness. His second series, “Ideal Utopia and the Chameleon Metaphor,” observed the multilayered structure of social and commercial relations in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, questioning whether interpersonal communication could evolve to an ideal plane. These works focus on social transformation and identity. His third series, “Domed Cistern,” takes the artist’s inner and spatial journey to a symbolic level. The cistern represents introspection and seclusion, while the dome represents spaces opening to spaciousness and elevation. In this series, which he also associates with Kafka’s concept of the bureaucratic labyrinth, Balcı explores the individual’s mental and social entrapment through architectural forms. His newest series, “Sky | Autumn,” poetically explores the cyclical relationship between nature and humanity. The visual contrast between the infinity of the sky and the transience of autumn also represents life’s oscillation between permanence and loss.Balcı has participated in numerous group exhibitions and art organizations, and his first solo exhibition, “Domed Cistern,” held in 2025, provided him with the opportunity to connect directly with the audience. His works, primarily focused on drawing, acrylic, and mixed media, often aim to construct narratives through layered surfaces, architectural forms, and imaginary figures.Selected Exhibitions:2022 – March 18 Drawing/Engraving Exhibition 2022 – What's New 9th Fine Arts Faculty Student Exhibition, Çanakkale 2022 – BASE – Trace and Communication Exhibition 2022–2023 – Fresh Ankara 2023–2024 – Fresh Ankara 2024 – ARTNOVA 2025 – ARTCONTACT Istanbul 2025 – “Domed Cistern” Solo Exhibition, Ziraat Bank Kuğulu Art GalleryAwards: 2024 – Fatih Municipality “From History to Canvas” Painting Competition, Honorable Mention
