
Who was Yusuf Katipoğlu? (1941 – November 4, 2018)
Yusuf Katipoğlu is one of the important artists in Turkish painting, particularly known for his unique style that poetically depicts Black Sea culture, the sea, and local life. His role as an educator, founder of art institutions, and long-term artistic output contributed significantly to the modern art scene in Turkey.
His Life and Education:
Born in Trabzon in 1941, he completed his secondary education there before pursuing art education. He entered the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, where he studied under Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu and graduated in 1968.
After his education, he worked as a teacher for a period. During this time, he continued his artistic production and worked to promote art education. Throughout his artistic career, Katipoğlu participated in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including the State Painting Exhibition, and held solo exhibitions.
The artist was married to the Swiss painter Ursula Soltermann Katipoğlu. The couple pursued their artistic production together for many years and worked in their studio in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul.
Institutional Contributions and Teaching;
One of the artist’s most important contributions was pioneering the establishment of a fine arts gallery and academic art environment in Trabzon in 1975. He founded this institution and managed it until 1978.
He also worked as a painting teacher in Trabzon; during this period, he contributed to the development of many young artists.
He was also involved in pantomime studies during a period of his artistic life and collaborated with Ergun Kolbek in this field.
Artistic Perspective;
Trabzon, the Black Sea, marine life, and coastal culture hold significant importance in Katipoğlu's paintings. In many of the artist's exhibitions, the sea, boats, and the people of the Black Sea are depicted metaphorically and poetically.
He is known to define his artistic approach through "originality, expression, skill, and the unity of color."
Throughout his artistic career:

• His works are included in many private collections and museums.
In 2007, he worked at the printmaking workshop of the Istanbul Graphic Arts Museum and continued his artistic production until the end of his life.

In 1981, he left teaching to focus entirely on art production and began living in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul.
The artist passed away in Istanbul on November 4, 2018. The cause of death was stated as lung cancer.
