Who was Yurdaer Altıntaş? (1935 Kars – 2019 Istanbul)

Yurdaer Altıntaş is among the pioneering figures of the period when the discipline of graphic design developed academically and professionally in Turkey. Starting his artistic life at a young age, Altıntaş produced work especially in the fields of graphic design, poster design, typography, and visual communication.
Yurdaer Altıntaş was born in Kars in 1935. In his first year of high school, he took and passed the entrance exams for the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts and began his painting education.
In 1952, he continued his education in the Poster Workshops of the Decorative Arts Department at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. Altıntaş began working professionally in his final year of higher education. He graduated from the advanced section of the Poster Workshop in 1957, and after a short six-month experience in an advertising agency, he preferred to work independently. His first solo exhibition, which he opened at the Turkish-German Cultural Center in 1964, was the first graphic design exhibition held in Turkey.
In 1965, he became the first Turkish graphic designer to have his work published in a foreign publication, Gebraucshgraphik, a German magazine. Starting in the second half of the 1960s, his work was accepted for numerous graphic design events held abroad.

He took initiatives to ensure the international recognition of Turkish graphic design. In 1968, he spearheaded the establishment of the Graphic Artists Association. His illustrations of Nasreddin Hodja were published as a book in England in 1974.

From his teaching position at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (İDGSA) in 1976 until his retirement from the Graphic Design Department of Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts in 2002, he held various roles in the field of graphic design education. From 1987 to 1993, he served as the president of the Graphic Designers Professional Organization. In 2004, he received the “ICOGRADA Achievement Award” from ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), the “Artist Honorary Award” at the 21st TÜYAP International Art Fair in 2011, the “Gloria Artis Cultural Merit Medal of the Republic of Poland” in 2012, the “Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland” in 2014, and the “Honorary Award” of the Turkish Design Advisory Council from the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology in 2016.

In 2009, he was elected a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale / International Graphics Association).
Altıntaş, who became a professor in 1995, was appointed head of the Graphic Design Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 1996 and a member of the university's board of directors in 2001. He retired from the same university in 2002. Until recently, he continued to contribute to graphic design education at Istanbul Culture University and Işık University. In 1996, he organized an international invited poster exhibition to celebrate his 60th birthday. Altıntaş's works are included in various museums and archives around the world. In 2011, his sixty years of work were exhibited at the 21st International Istanbul Art Fair, and he received the Artist Honorary Award. Yurdaer Altıntaş passed away in Istanbul in 2019. The artist's works have been accepted into our museum through donation.
