Turan Erol

Who is Turan Erol?

Turan Erol was born in 1927 in Milas district of Muğla. He passed the talent exam in 1944 and entered the painting department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, graduating from the Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu Workshop in 1951. He taught painting and art history for eight years in secondary schools in different provinces of Turkey.
In 1960, while he was working at the General Directorate of Fine Arts of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey, he went to Paris with a scholarship from the French government and conducted research and studies on painting for three years. He copied Francisco Goya’s painting titled Marquise de la Solana in the Louvre Museum. After returning from Paris in 1964, he worked as a lecturer at Ankara Gazi Education Institute until 1973. He completed his doctorate in 1974 with his thesis titled Human and Animal Figure in Turkish Painting. He received the title of associate professor in 1978 with his thesis titled The Formation Process of Contemporary Turkish Painting and Bedri Rahmi Eyüpoğlu. He served as the chairman of the Plastic Arts Board of the Ministry of Culture for a year. In 1980, he shared the Sedat Simavi Foundation Visual Arts Award with painter Adnan Varınca.
The artist, who taught in the painting department of Gazi University Faculty of Education for four years since 1983, was appointed to Hacettepe University Faculty of Fine Arts after receiving the title of professor in 1985. Turan Erol served at this faculty until his retirement in 1990.

Turan Erol also designed the cover of Yaşar Kemal's book titled Demirciler Çarşısı Cinayeti. The artist, who was deemed worthy of the title of state artist in 1991, was one of the founding members of the Group of Ten. He was also among the founding members of the United Painters and Sculptors Association, which was established in 1970.
Turan Erol died at the age of 96 in the hospital where he was treated in Ankara on February 15, 2023. Her husband Türkan Erol also died in the morning hours of the next day. Turan and Türkan Erol couple were buried in Gölbaşı Cemetery after the funeral prayer performed at Kocatepe Mosque on February 17.
Turan Erol was the last surviving member of the Group of 10.
