Inspired by the great masters of literature, the exhibition addresses themes such as the bond established with family, modern man’s search for identity, and the ruptures experienced. The exhibition organized by the International Plastic Arts Association was curated by Melik İskender.

Belgin Akın, Serkan Böncü, Heather Brown, Gülhan, Alireza Mojabi, Nihal Tiryakioğlu, Farah Trabisi, Nesli Türk, Şehnaz Yalçın and Martin Wholwend participated in the exhibition with their works. Artists from five different countries who have either never met each other or have never established any social ties even if they have met, came together with their works that they have produced independently.

The “Ties, Shadows and Traces” exhibition was also inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, James Joyce’s “Ulysses” and Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”.

THE FIRST TIE A HUMAN BREAKS IS THE UMBILICAL CORD
The exhibition’s promotional bulletin drew attention to the bonds that living beings establish and break. The bulletin said, “Living beings that struggle to exist throughout their lives establish many bonds or break existing bonds. The first physical bond an individual breaks with birth is the umbilical cord. However, this bond can be evaluated as a powerful metaphor that affects the complex relationships a person has with society and reflects the relationships an individual has with themselves, their family and the regional and universal environment they interact with. When considered ironically, the deep effects and complexities of this bond on human life become even more apparent.”

ATTENTION WAS DRAWN TO THE BOND ESTABLISHED WITH THE MOTHER
The promotional article referring to the Buendia family said, “In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’ the story of the Buendia family that spans generations is affected by the family’s fortune and the chain of events of individuals connected to each other, while showing how family ties shape human life.” The expressions were used.

The article also drew attention to the bond established with the mother, and said, “While progressing by developing the bond with life, development, sense of trust, experiences of independence, control action, discovering gender identity, experiencing social roles, forming social skills and establishing social relationships, the bond with the mother is the fundamental element affecting the entire life of the individual, according to Freud.”

MODERN MAN’S SEARCH FOR IDENTITY
The bulletin also referred to the novel “Ulysses”, and drew attention to the modern man’s search for identity:

“The modern man’s search for identity represents the ties to the past and the ironic shadows of these ties by questioning the individual’s connections with himself and his environment by telling the story of a day Leopold Bloom spent on the streets of Dublin in James Joyce’s novel ‘Ulysses’. In Franz Kafka’s work ‘The Metamorphosis’, there is not only a physical bond, but also the severing of social and emotional connections.”
