Prepared as part of the 35th International Virginia Woolf Conference hosted by Istanbul Bilgi University, the exhibition ‘Virginia Woolf: Echoes Across Shores’ has opened its doors to visitors at the Energy Museum.
The exhibition, which brings together different forms of contemporary art expression with Virginia Woolf's literary world, invites visitors to reconsider the author's works within the cultural and sensory atmosphere of Istanbul through its interdisciplinary approach centered on sound, memory, and space.
Shaped around the theme of "Virginia Woolf and Sound" this year, the exhibition reinterprets the concepts of sound, silence, memory, space, and sensory experience prominent in Woolf's works through different forms of contemporary art expression.
THE EXHIBITION FEATURES WORKS BY 13 ARTISTS
Curated by Demet Karabulut Dede, Levent Tökün, and Derya Sayın, the exhibition includes works by Ayşe Orhon, Bengisu Bayrak, Eda Çekil, Gülsün Orhon, Hasan Nazif Yılmaz, İrem Güngez, Mesrure Melis Bilgin Koen, Naz Işıksoy, Özlem İşbilir, Paola Giorgi, Rebecca Wood, Sinan Aruser, and Zeynep Abacı.
Inspired by Istanbul's unique soundscape, the exhibition treats Woolf's texts not merely as works to be read, but as narratives that can be seen, heard, and experienced. Focusing on the relationship between text and space, silence and echo, individual experience and collective memory, the exhibition draws attention to the re-echoing of Virginia Woolf's literature in different geographies and cultures.
