The exhibition “Aesthetic Memory: A Selection from the Terakki Foundation Art Collection,” curated by Nazlı Pektaş, will be on display at the Terakki Foundation Art Gallery from June 17 to July 17, 2026.
The selection from the Terakki Foundation Art Collection brings together the stylistic articulations and historical turning points of modern art in Turkey on an institutional memory level. Works added to the collection at different times, when placed side-by-side, transform the backbone of Turkish painting and sculpture from the late 19th century to the present day into a holistic conceptual map. This map reflects the genetic codes of the intellectual and aesthetic dialogue established on the Paris-Istanbul axis; This selection reveals the process of integrating Western modern movements into the curriculum of one of the country's oldest educational institutions, thereby reconciling them with local contexts and showcasing the progressive transformation of a deeply rooted tradition.
This selection brings together artists from cornerstone groups that have shaped the direction of Turkish painting and sculpture, all within the same institutional memory. Beginning with Şevket Dağ's rational construction of space; passing through the Cubist-Structuralist interventions of the "d" Group pioneers, the social testimony of Nuri İyem and the Yeniler Group, and the abstract wave of the 1950s, this conceptual axis ultimately converges with the lyrical sensibility of the Paris School and Komet's metaphysical dreams that explore the inner world of humanity.
