Who is Şeyma Lakot? (1996-Trabzon)
Born in 1996 in Trabzon, Şeyma Lakot completed her secondary education at Trabzon Anatolian Fine Arts High School. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2019 and her Master’s degree in 2022 from the Department of Painting at Anadolu University Faculty of Fine Arts, both with distinction. She is currently pursuing her Doctoral studies at the same university and continues her artistic practice in her studio based in Trabzon.
Artistic Perspective
In her artistic practice, Lakot combines traditional painting techniques with contemporary expressive mediums such as eclectic elements and original printmaking. Her work explores the relationship between nature and humanity within the context of sustainability, cultural heritage, and social dynamics. Ecological awareness and environmentally friendly production methods are central to her creative process; by incorporating waste materials and upcycling techniques into her art, she conceptually and materially investigates nature’s processes of transformation.
Blending folkloric iconography with contemporary narratives, Lakot develops a layered visual language that aims to make visible the connections between individual and collective memory. Drawing inspiration from the rich ecological structure and cultural memory of Trabzon, she addresses contemporary issues such as environmental degradation and spatial transformation. Through the integration of local imagery with contemporary art, she constructs new societal narratives rooted in personal experience.
