He began his artistic life during his years at Kuleli Military High School, where he took lessons from the painter Sami Yetik, leading him to pursue painting at a professional level.

Boyar was not only a painter but also a researcher who contributed to art history. Published in 1948, his book “Turkish Painters, Their Lives and Works in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey” is considered one of the fundamental sources for Turkish art history.
