CONTEMPORARY TURKISH PAINTERS

Nevin Keskin

Who is Nevin Keskin? (1965-Ankara)

Nevin Keskin was born in 1965 in Ankara, Türkiye. Her primary, middle and high school education also completed in Ankara. She graduated from Public Relations at Anadolu University. Nevin started to work at Ankara University School of Medicine Department of Medical Pharmacology and also she retired from the same institute.

Nevin started her professional art education at young ages with Eşref Üren, internationally acclaimed painter from Turkey. And later on she continued her education with Osman Zeki Oral for three years. And last, she attended Sabri Akça’s studio to study contemporary art for seven years. In between years, she started to develop her own collage technique in modern and contemporary art which resulted in her creating a signature unique style. Her paintings theme strong women is born.

Defying the sexism, the stereotype and ethnocentric image of women is the main drive and inspiration of the artist’s unique style. The portraits and figures are presented in a comfortable, exaggerated and deformed positions. The subjects are defined as practicing and demanding their right for freedom on the canvas in down-to-earth, aesthetic and elegant way. The heels and the pointed toe cap are symbolising the impatience towards social pressure on women. The higher the amount of pressure reflects on how sharp and long the heels and the toe cap of the shoes are. They almost challenge and dare the viewer with their existence in a sophisticated manner.

Contemporary artist Nevin Keskin’s characteristic approach to use the materials as texture creates a very unique touch to her mix media paintings which includes acrylic and collage technique on canvas. The viewer always find something personal on Nevin’s paintings.

Artist lives in Ankara, Turkey with her happy cat Dora Maar.

Art Perspective;

The reoccurring and most apparent image of  high heel shoes actually portray the main theme of the
artist’s work which is strong women who can overcome hardships and their support for each other.
Their chilled and relaxed behaviour while seated is a statement of these strong women challenging the
so called established norms . They know their rights and demand respect and acknowledgement in the
society. The exaggerated  pointy heels and toe caps are symbolising adversity and oppression women
face daily.
Nevin excluding herself from being stereotyped is fighting against traditional society’s conservative
rules, beliefs, sexism and ethnocentrism by showing her women powerful and grounded.  So she
visually describes  them aesthetically with elegance and grace using her unique collage technique.
In her words, painting is a journey navigated by her inner voice. It starts with a plan knowing that it will
go through many changes and improve during its course. She is still amazed by how this period acts
like an oracle contributing as  new experiences and affecting her personal journey as an artist.
The artist keeps piles of paper clippings from magazines and newspapers in her studio. The tiresome
course of selecting pieces actually starts the process of colour and texture choices for the artwork.
She explains “The newspapers and magazines that I use as materials in my work are not just pieces
of papers or images. They can be a natural stimulants to start the creative process or  trigger
inspiration. I create a unique mixture of colours, images or clips of words once an idea is formed. I am
trying to stay away from rules but rely on my instinct, emotion and of course, imagination. The colour
choices I make do not only reflect my emotional state of that moment but also an overwhelming
energy that comes within. I think colours posses a lot of power and can associate with many
elements.”
Nevin believes her life since childhood, inspirations and the sub-conscious are the three core elements
that drives her art. She adds “The best part of it is to create visual art so that anyone can see, relate
and maybe find a story that belong to them in there.”
