Mustafa Sururi Taylan (1891–1947) was one of the important Turkish painters who emerged during the founding years of the Republic and whose works depicted the spirit of the National Struggle, the people of Anatolia, the ideals of the Republic, and the social transformation of the new Turkey. His Life:
Mustafa Sururi Taylan was born in Istanbul in 1891. After completing his primary and secondary education, he attended Vefa High School. He later enrolled in the Literature Department of Darülfünun (Istanbul University). However, due to his interest in painting, he left this education unfinished and entered the School of Fine Arts, one of the most important art institutions of the time. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of the French-born painter Valeri. Here, he focused on academic drawing, figure studies, and compositional understanding. He graduated in 1912. The disciplined work habits and strong drawing knowledge he acquired during his academy years formed the basis of the historical compositions he would create in later years. Following his graduation, the war years began for the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Sururi Taylan joined the army and fulfilled his military service. During the war, he was taken prisoner and spent some time in Siberia. This difficult experience profoundly affected the artist’s life and intellectual world. The observations he made during his captivity influenced his later focus on themes such as national struggle, independence, and human will. After returning to Turkey, he continued his artistic work. With the proclamation of the Republic and the establishment of the new state, he took an active role as an artist in the shaping cultural environment. Mustafa Sururi Taylan, who participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout his life,suffered a stroke in 1945 and passed away in 1947 in the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality’s orphanage.
