Loft Art, operating as a social responsibility project of Akfen Holding, welcomed art lovers to its venue in Nisbetiye On, Beşiktaş, Istanbul, with the exhibition 'The Geography of Memory.' The exhibition, which opened today, brings together works that explore the multifaceted relationship between memory, space, and identity. The exhibition will be open to visitors until June 14th.
The exhibition features works by 13 artists: Aleyna Gökdemir, Ağıt Uludağ, Bilalcan Kara, Elif Aydoğmuş, Nazan İlcan, Melek Baydar, Mehtap Dursun, Sinan Dağ, Seda Oturmak, Şükran Dokumacı, Taha Düzler, Sebahattin Yüce, and Zeynep Doğa Karabulut. The traces of individual and collective memory are reinterpreted through spatial narratives.
A JOURNEY BETWEEN MEMORY AND SPACE: "THE GEOGRAPHY OF MEMORY"
"The Geography of Memory" offers an art experience that invites viewers to consider memory not as a static recording space, but as a constantly evolving and reshaping space. The works in the exhibition reveal that remembering is not merely returning to the past; it is a process that is constantly recreated.
When we recall a memory, we don't just return to the past; our mood, the space we are in, and our emotional state transform the way we remember. The same memory can take on completely different meanings at different times; sometimes it becomes prominent, sometimes it fades away.
In this context, space stands out as an inseparable part of memory. A city, a room, or a familiar street becomes not just a physical place, but an emotional surface bearing the traces of past experiences. While the exhibition invites the viewer to experience this multi-layered relationship, each work gains new meaning in conjunction with the viewer's own way of remembering.
"The Geography of Memory," instead of fixing the past, makes visible how memory shifts, expands, and is remapped over time. The exhibition offers the viewer a perspective that questions not so much what the past was, but where and how it is positioned today.
