Who is Prof. Dr. Kemal İskender? (1949, Trabzon – 2026, Istanbul)
An Intellectual Art Space Established Between Painting, Thought, and Writing
Kemal İskender, a Turkish painter, art writer, and academic, is considered one of the important figures who shaped art education, art criticism, and contemporary painting thought in Turkey, especially from the last quarter of the 20th century onwards. He served as a faculty member at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Faculty of Fine Arts for many years; he developed a multifaceted artistic identity that combined artistic production with theoretical thought, writing, and education. Influential in both contemporary Turkish painting and art writing, İskender is among the representatives of a generation of artists who valued the permeability between painting and text. Through his works and writings, he opened up discussions on issues such as the modernization process in Turkey, the historical continuity of art, and the social position of the artist.
His Life and Art Education;
Kemal İskender was born in 1949 in Yomra district of Trabzon. She graduated from the Department of Painting at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1972.
Following her graduation, she won first place in the European scholarship exam opened by the Ministry of National Education and went to England. She studied stained glass and engraving at the London Central School of Art and Design. Later, she received her master’s degree in painting from the Royal College of Art in 1977.
In her academic career, she received the title of professor in 1993. For many years, she played an active role in art education and museology. Between 1991 and 2000, she served as the director of the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum and contributed to the museum’s publications.
Also active in art writing, İskender published numerous articles in magazines such as Sanat Çevresi, Türkiye’de Sanat, and Genç Sanat.
Academic, Artist, and Writer Identity;
Kemal İskender is considered one of the rare figures in Turkey who simultaneously embodies the identities of artist, critic, and writer. In his art writings, he has addressed topics such as:
• The relationship between modernization and art
• The continuity of art history
• The intellectual background of the artwork
• The social position of the artist
In his academic approach, he proposes an interdisciplinary reading that considers the artwork not only as an aesthetic object but also within its historical, cultural, and intellectual context.
Artistic Understanding and Painting Language;
In İskender's paintings, figurative and abstract tendencies come together in a balanced tension.
For the artist, color, surface, and composition are not only formal issues; they are also areas of intellectual research. In his paintings, often:
• A spatial arrangement with internal intensity
• A simplified but profound narrative language
• Visual thought centered on sensation
• Creating atmosphere and mental space rather than narrative
are prominent. This approach separates İskender from the narrative-centered figurative tradition, bringing him closer to a more conceptual and intellectual field of painting.
The Connection Established Between Painting and Text;
One of the most striking aspects of Kemal İskender's artistic production is the importance he gives to the relationship between painting and writing.
In his approach:
• Painting is a way of thinking
• Writing is the theoretical unfolding of this thinking
Therefore, İskender is among the artists who do not limit their art production solely to studio practice; they see the production of thought as an integral part of their art practice.
Art Education and Institutional Contributions in Turkey;
During his long academic career at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, İskender contributed to the training of numerous artists.
He also contributed to the development of art institutions in Turkey through his museology, archival, and publishing work. He played a particular role in the creation of the institutional memory of the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum.
Exhibitions and His Position in the Art Environment;
Kemal İskender has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Türkiye and abroad. His position in the art world is evaluated on three axes:
1. Production as a painter
2. Art education as an academic
3. Intellectual contribution as a writer and critic
This multi-layered structure has made him not only an artist who produces work, but also an intellectual figure who produces art thought.
His Place in Contemporary Turkish Art;
Kemal İskender is one of the important representatives of the generation of artists who, especially in the Turkish art world after 1980, dealt with painting and thought together.
His art practice:
• Increases the intellectual depth of modern Turkish painting
• Bridges the gap between art education and art criticism
• Represents an approach that treats painting not only as a visual but also as a mental production field.
Kemal İskender played an important role in the formation of contemporary painting thought in Turkey; by combining his identities as artist, academic, and writer, he made the multi-layered structure of art visible.
Thanks to his approach that emphasizes the relationship between painting and text, his understanding of art that treats the artwork not only as an aesthetic object but also as a field of intellectual production, and his academic contributions, he holds a privileged position in Turkish art history.
