Who was İlhami Ercivan? (1942 Akseki – 2004 Kuşadası)
İlhami Ercivan, known in Turkish painting especially for his original printmaking works, his role as an educator, and his institutional contributions to the İzmir art scene, was born in 1942 in Akseki, Antalya, and passed away on July 20, 2004, in Davutlar, Kuşadası. The artist was both a prolific painter and a long-time art education educator, becoming one of the important representatives of the art and craft teaching tradition in Turkey.
His Life and Education:
Born in Akseki, Antalya in 1942, Ercivan completed his primary education in Güzelsu. He graduated from Aksu Primary Teacher Training School in 1960 and worked as a primary school teacher in Urfa. This early teaching experience shaped both his pedagogical approach and his interest in the people and life of Anatolia. In 1964, she graduated from the Graphic Arts Department of the Painting Faculty at Gazi Education Institute. That same year, she was appointed as a painting and crafts teacher at Sinop Girls’ Primary Teacher Training School. Between 1968 and 1970, upon the offer and appointment of the Ministry of National Education, she served as assistant director and art history teacher at Erzurum Education Institute. This period allowed Ercivan to develop not only as a practitioner but also as a highly theoretical art educator. In 1970, she was appointed as a Graphics and Art History teacher at the Painting and Crafts Education Department of İzmir Education Institute. In 1984, she worked as a painting teacher at Buca High School. In 1987, she received her bachelor’s degree from the Painting and Crafts Education Department of Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Faculty of Education. She retired in 1996 from her position at Karataş High School, which she started in 1988. Even after retirement, the artist remained connected to art and education, working as an instructor in the Original Printmaking Workshop at the Department of Painting and Art Education, Buca Faculty of Education, Dokuz Eylül University, between 1996 and 2004. This workshop became a key center in the training of many young artists in the field of original printmaking in İzmir.
Art Perspective;
İlhami Ercivan's artistic production combines the disciplined structure of graphic arts education with the sensitivity of Anatolian themes. Known especially for his work in original printmaking (engraving, linoleum print, woodcut, etc.), the artist has developed a strong compositional understanding based on line. His works frequently address:
• Anatolian people,
• rural life,
• themes of labor and production,
• female figures,
• social solidarity,
• the relationship between nature and the city.
The formal arrangement in his compositions is extremely controlled. Due to his graphic origins, line is the fundamental determinant in Ercivan's art. He addresses the relationship between figure and space within a rhythmic surface arrangement. While a dramatic effect is seen in his prints based on black-and-white contrasts, a warm and balanced palette is observed in his color works. The artist's works carry both academic discipline and emotional intensity. Without abandoning figurative expression, he has moved towards a modernist simplification; with an expressive approach, he has tried to transform the local into a universal plastic language.
Institutional Contributions and Impact on the Art Scene;
In 1990, he founded the Ercivan Art Gallery in İzmir, bringing together not only his own works but also the works of artists from different generations with art lovers. This initiative is important for the development of independent art spaces in İzmir. As an educator, he has trained hundreds of students; he has particularly contributed to the dissemination of original printmaking techniques at the academic level. During his time as a lecturer, he transformed the studio environment into a production-oriented and research-based structure.
