Who was İhsan Çakıcı? (1944 – February 2026)

İhsan Çakıcı is one of the important figures in Turkish painting after the Republic period, who grew up within the academic tradition and maintained both his artist and educator identities. His figurative approach, the importance he gave to drawing discipline, his original printmaking works, and his long-standing exhibition activities have secured him a lasting place in the Turkish art scene.

His Life:
İhsan Çakıcı was born in 1944 in Akşehir district of Konya. He completed his primary and secondary education there. His interest in art became evident at an early age, and he pursued art education accordingly.
After completing the Painting and Art Education Department of Gazi Education Institute in 1969, he was appointed to Tunceli Male Primary Teacher Training School. While continuing his teaching duties, he also continued his artistic production.
In 1972, he passed the exam opened by the Ministry of National Education and became an assistant in the Painting and Art Education Department of Gazi Education Institute. After three years of assistantship, he was found successful by the commission in 1975 and his permanent appointment was confirmed.

He received his degree in art in 1985; he became an assistant professor in 1987. He continued his academic career at Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education. He retired from this institution in 1999. After retirement, he continued to contribute to art education.
He passed away in February 2026.

İhsan Çakıcı’s art is based on a figurative understanding rooted in a strong foundation in drawing. His academic training has created a solid sense of structure in his compositions.

• 1988 – “Mimar Sinan's 400th Anniversary Exhibition” organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism
• 1998 – “Modern Turkish Painters Exhibition” organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dublin
In addition to these, he has participated in many national and international group exhibitions. Throughout his artistic career:
• He has held 31 solo exhibitions in Turkey and abroad.
• He has won 18 awards. • His works are included in private and public institutional collections. • He is a member of the United Painters and Sculptors Association.

Educator Identity;
İhsan Çakıcı is an art educator who grew up within the Gazi tradition and passed this tradition on to new generations. Through his courses in Painting and Art Education, he has contributed to the training of numerous teachers and artists.
He played an active role in the development of institutional art education by obtaining the titles of art proficiency and assistant professor during his academic advancement.

His Position in Turkish Painting History;
İhsan Çakıcı is among the artists who continued the academic figurative tradition in Turkish painting after 1960. He is particularly a representative of the art pedagogy tradition that developed along the lines of Gazi Education Institute and subsequently Gazi University. His position in the history of Turkish painting can be evaluated under the following headings:
