Who was Halim Fikri? (1888 – 1937)
The period from the late Ottoman Empire to the early years of the Republic is a period of institutionalization and modernization for Turkish painting. During this period, the generation of military painters played a significant role in establishing Western painting techniques in the Ottoman art scene. Halim Fikri was one of the artists within this generation.
Born in 1888 and died in 1937, Halim Fikri was trained within the military education system and is known especially for his landscape and marine paintings. During his art education, he was a student of two important Turkish painters: Halil Pasha and Hoca Ali Rıza. The influence of these two artists is clearly visible in Halim Fikri’s painting style.
His Life;
Halim Fikri was trained within the art education system of military schools, one of the important institutions of modern painting education in the Ottoman period. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, painting education in the Ottoman Empire was mostly given in military institutions. Therefore, like many painters, Halim Fikri received military training and developed his painting skills in this environment. His being a student of two master painters in his art education is one of the fundamental factors that determined his artistic understanding:
Halil Pasha
Hoca Ali Rıza
Both of these artists were influential in spreading Impressionist tendencies in Turkish painting. The understanding of light and color seen in Halim Fikri’s landscape and nature depictions is a result of these influences.
