Who is Gül Derman? (1942 Ankara – September 4, 1994 Germencik-Aydın)

An Artist Strengthened by International Experience in Turkish Printmaking

Gül Derman was born in Ankara in 1942. She graduated from Arnavutköy American Girls’ College in 1962. In 1971, she received her undergraduate degree from the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu Workshop. She completed her doctoral studies in Art History at Istanbul University in 1982. Thus, she established her art practice on an academic foundation, becoming one of the artists who nourished her production with theoretical awareness.

International Education and Workshop Experience;

External experience played a decisive role in Gül Derman’s art career.
Between 1970–1975 and 1980, with a scholarship from the Austrian Government Ministry of Culture, she studied at the Salzburg Summer Academy with Prof. Otto Eglau and Prof. She attended the Engraving and Lithography Departments under the direction of Werner Otte.
In 1977, she worked at the Printmaking Department of the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Between 1981 and 1993, she worked as a guest artist six times at the Salzburg Lithography Workshop.
This period allowed the artist to develop her technical competence, especially in the fields of lithography and engraving, at an international level.

Screen Printing Works in Turkey;
Between 1982 and 1994, she worked in screen printing at Süleyman Saim Tekcan’s workshop in Söğütlüçeşme and at the Çamlıca Art House.
Gül Derman became one of the longest-serving artists in the screen printing workshop; she worked almost like an honorary ambassador of the institution. With her technical knowledge, production discipline, and contribution to the workshop culture, she holds a privileged position in this field.

His doctorate in art history enabled him to develop an analytical perspective in his production. Combining practical application with theoretical knowledge, the artist is considered one of the influential figures in strengthening Turkish printmaking through international connections after 1970. Her Final Years:
Gül Derman passed away in 1994.
