From map-making to works of art: An exhibition by soldier-painters, reaching across the Turkic world, has opened...
An exhibition featuring works by soldier-painters has opened to art enthusiasts at the Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu Exhibition Hall within the Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum.
Organized as part of the "Ankara: Tourism Capital of the Turkic World 2026" events, the "Soldier-Painters" exhibition is now welcoming visitors at the Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate of Fine Arts, the exhibition—part of the "Ankara: Tourism Capital of the Turkic World 2026" program—brings together works by a generation of soldier-painters spanning the Ottoman era to the Republic, alongside pieces by contemporary artists who continue this tradition.
Aiming to shed light on the shared history, cultural heritage, and artistic memory of the Turkic world through the medium of painting, the exhibition unites the artistic legacy of the past with the interpretations of today’s artists.
The exhibition includes works by prominent figures from the generation of soldier-painters, such as Ali Bey, Halil Paşa, Hüseyin Zekai Paşa, Hüseyin Giritli, Diyarbakırlı Tahsin, Ali Sami Yetik, Mehmet Ruhi Arel, Ali Cemal Benim, and Hikmet Onat. Furthermore, the exhibition features works by Ahmet Öğreten, Ayhan Özyavuz, Baha Özyükseler, Benan Küçükoğlu, Cihangir Akşit, Emine Apatay Alkanalka, Erdal Bölükbaşı, Ersin Yaman, Ertan Aykanat, Erol Altunay, Erol Efir, Halil Öztunç, Haluk Aydemir, Hürriyet Munanoğlu, Hüseyin Bulut, Hüseyin Korzay, İkrami Özturan, Kamuran Apaydın, Kazım Murat Özkan, Nadir Soydan, Nazım Kervan, Nazmi Tokgöz, Necdet Şen, Oktay Yener, Özcan Kutlu, Özer Ünsal, Sabri Topdağı, Selahattin Sosay, Seyfettin Koç, Sinan İlen, Şenol Alparslan, Turan Kaplan, Yasin Çiçek, and Yaşar Yıldız.
The exhibition, which carries the tradition of "soldier-painters"—inherited from the past—into the present day through various techniques and styles, aims to establish a connection between historical heritage and contemporary artistic production.
The exhibition, held at the Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu Exhibition Hall of the Ankara State Art and Sculpture Museum, will be open to visitors until October 25.
