Fahri Sümer

Prof. Dr. Fahri Sümer (1942–2023)

An Academic Painter Who Interpreted Picturesque Life Culture with a Lyrical and Abstract Language

Prof. Dr. Fahri Sümer was born in Bozüyük in 1942. He graduated from Darüşşafaka High School in 1960. In 1965, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (İDGSA).
He received the title of associate professor at Dokuz Eylül University in 1986; in 1987, he started teaching at the Buca Faculty of the same university. Sümer, who received the title of professor in 1992, continued his teaching at the Buca Faculty of Dokuz Eylül University for many years, contributing to the training of many artists. The artist, who passed away in 2023, left a lasting mark on Turkish painting with both his academic identity and his unique painting language.

Artistic Influences and Pictorial Personality;
The artist has formed his pictorial personality primarily under the influence of powerful masters of Western painting, including Rembrandt, Paul Cézanne, and Bernard Buffet, as well as the Sino-Japanese art tradition. These influences are reflected in his art as:
• The decisive role of line
• Reduced color and tonal values
• A structural compositional approach
• The unity of figure and space

Artistic Perspective;
Reduced Color – Strong Line
Fahri Sümer works with regional subjects using reduced color and tonal values. Color is not exaggerated; it is used as a controlled and structural element. The line is prominent and is the fundamental dynamic that establishes the composition.
Landscape and Aegean Picturesque
In the landscapes he has created since the 1990s, the picturesque atmosphere of the Aegean coastal cities becomes particularly prominent. Coastal, urban, and resort areas are depicted not only based on observation but also as areas carrying the lyrical trace of lived experience. Human-Space Harmony
The artist reflects the harmony between humans and their environment with an abstract tendency. Historical and natural spaces are blended with all dimensions of the human fabric. Movement, dynamic life, and heartfelt brushstrokes become prominent within the spatial composition.

Lyrical Aesthetics and Visual Rhythm;
Fahri Sümer's painting is based on a picturesque culture of life. However, it also contains the unique taste of aesthetics in a lyrical dimension of sensation. • A painting architecture where color exists with form and movement
• A sense of depth
• Fluid rhythm within the space
constitutes his unique pictorial language.
