CONTEMPORARY TURKISH PAINTERS

Ercan Kizir

Who is Ercan Kizir? (2001-Amasya)

He was born in Amasya in 2001. He graduated from Amasya Fine Arts and Sports High School in 2019.
He was accepted to Dokuz Eylül University Buca Faculty of Education, Department of Art Teaching in the same year and graduated in 2024.
Focusing on classical pattern and composition in the early stages of his art practice, Kizir turned to an expressionist and atmospheric language over time.
Kizir’s artistic practice is shaped around human-centered narratives and explores themes such as deficiency, pain, violence, love and trauma. Strong brush strokes, intense contrasts and a raw, emotional aesthetic are at the forefront of his works. His understanding of art is based on embracing imperfection as an artistic value and making it an inseparable part of human nature.
Kizir defines his understanding of art with the following words:
“I generally use cold, dull colors, dark tones and textured surfaces in my works. From time to time, I create contradictions with golden details, and with these crumbs of light, I emphasize hope in the darkness, but also arrogance and fragility. My figures are made up of shadows; indistinct bodies, undefined silhouettes wait to be completed in the mind of the viewer. This is both an aesthetic choice and a strategy that invites the viewer to active participation. The themes such as war trauma, individual loneliness, identity confusion and confrontation with memory are at the core of my interdisciplinary productions.

For me, art is not an expression but a way of being.”
The artist’s productions are not limited to painting; they also cover different disciplines such as sculpture, 3D art and artificial intelligence-supported digital works. In the works he produces with artificial intelligence, he aims to offer the viewer a real oil painting effect by preserving the texture and depth of traditional art.
