Artist Deniz Say opened her exhibition "Once Upon a Time, Something Else" at Sokratin Arts and Culture, featuring works created from waste materials. The exhibition, featuring 41 works, highlights recycling and environmental awareness.

"Once Upon a Time, Something Else", a solo exhibition featuring works made from waste materials, has opened.

Hosted by Sokratin Arts and Culture, the exhibition brings together 41 works created by the artist by upcycling clothing, packaging, magazines, and everyday items she has collected over the years.

Speaking at the opening, Pınar Kandemir, Founder of Sokratin Arts and Culture, stated that the organization has been conducting cultural and artistic activities for a year, saying, "We strive to spread art to every segment of society. All our efforts are dedicated to this. Therefore, since our founding, we have strived to serve a function far beyond being an art gallery."

Kandemir stated that it takes "a great deal of courage" for an artist to explore new paths rather than continuing with the same techniques and static patterns. He said, "We will be hosting Deniz Say's works here for two months. During this time, we will be hosting students here, in particular, and conducting many activities related to recycling, upcycling, and environmental awareness."

"I feel like I've given waste a second chance"

Artist Deniz Say told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter, "The exhibition was born from a very simple yet powerful idea. Everything in life was once something else. Nothing ever completely disappears; everything transforms into something else."

Say, noting his use of waste materials in his work, said, "I abstract waste materials from their functions and incorporate them into artworks. I feel like I've given them a different life, or a second chance."

Say explained that the colors and textures emerge in later stages of the process, and that for him, the waste material used is what truly matters.

Say, stating that her works have both aesthetic and ethical dimensions, stated that she aims to draw attention to the waste problem facing the world through her works. Say said, "Sometimes I render everyday materials unrecognizable. When the viewer stands in front of the painting, sometimes they understand which material I used, and sometimes they don't. They're surprised in a way, and I really enjoy that."

The artist Say emphasized her aim to raise awareness in the audience, saying, "Those objects I didn't throw away have become even more valuable within a work of art. I leave the viewer with the question, 'Could it have been possible if you hadn't thrown away these things you consider waste and used them elsewhere?'"

The exhibition will be open to visitors until November 16th.
