Erkin Keskin, “Traces and Faces”

Written by: Güven Baykan

In his exhibition titled “Traces and Faces,” Erkin Keskin confronts the viewer not only with painting but also with a multi-layered field of perception where senses intertwine. In his paintings, the line is not merely an element that establishes form; it is also a trace of memory, rhythm, and a vibration that transforms into an inner voice. Every line, every break, every color transition that proliferates across the surface seems to transform into a visual representation of music coming from within. Therefore, looking at Keskin's paintings is not limited to simply seeing; It simultaneously transforms into an experience that opens up to hearing, feeling, and remembering. The female portraits at the heart of the exhibition are the most powerful carriers of this narrative. The artist's linear language, reminiscent of engraving sensitivity, creates an extraordinary sense of effort and attention to detail on the surface, while the relief technique she developed gives the painting physical depth. Thus, the face ceases to be merely a represented image; it transforms into an almost living surface with its texture, cracks, traces, and layers. Here, the viewer does not only encounter a portrait; they also see how time, lived experiences, and vibrations of the inner world are imbued in the painting.

This structure that Keskin creates with female figures is further deepened by the Phoenix motif. This bird image, which appears sometimes directly and sometimes implicitly in the works, becomes a symbol of rebirth, transformation, and resilience. The Phoenix, combined with the lines, layers, and bursts of color on the faces, does not remain merely a mythological reference; it also becomes a symbol of the existence that humanity rebuilds by passing through its own inner destructions. In this respect, the exhibition carries an existential narrative as much as an aesthetic construct. Another striking aspect of the paintings is the highly dynamic relationship established between the figure and the background.

The background is never merely a backdrop; it is a space that breathes with the face, expands with it, and stretches with it. This structure, where colors collide and lines intertwine, allows us to consider the portraits not as fixed objects, but as constantly evolving states of mind. The face here is not a finished identity, but a memory in a state of becoming. “Traces and Faces” is an exhibition that makes us rethink the difference between looking and seeing. More importantly, it makes visible that subtle but decisive threshold between seeing and feeling. Erkin Keskin's paintings take the viewer from being an outsider and include them in the sensory climate of the work. Thus, the face moves away from being just a face; it becomes the carrier of memory, wound, resistance, transformation, and resurrection. The result is a powerful and multi-layered narrative where color becomes echo, line becomes rhythm, and the body becomes memory.
