
Who was Ziya Keseroğlu? (June 27, 1906 – August 9, 1973)
The first generation of artists of the Republic era played a significant role in the development of Turkish painting by combining the academic art tradition inherited from the Ottoman era with a modern understanding of art. One of the artists in this generation was Ziya Keseroğlu.
Known for his lyrical expression, strong compositional understanding, and sensitivity to color in his paintings, Keseroğlu contributed to Turkish painting through both his art production and his work in art education.
His Life:
Ziya Keseroğlu was born in Istanbul on June 27, 1906, and passed away in Istanbul on August 9, 1973.
After completing his primary and secondary education, in 1922 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts (Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi, which is today’s Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), one of the most important art education institutions of the time. At the Academy, he first worked in the studios of Hikmet Onat, and later İbrahim Çallı.
These two artists are leading representatives of the art circle known as the Çallı Generation in Turkish painting, and played a significant role in the spread of Impressionist painting in Turkey.
Keseroğlu graduated from the Academy in 1930.
In 1932, he went to Vienna for a short time and had the opportunity to get to know the European art scene closely.
In the same year, he was accepted as a member of the Independent Painters and Sculptors Association, one of the pioneering groups of modern art movements in Turkey.
The artist also served as the president of this association for a period.
From 1946 onwards, he turned to art education and worked as a painting teacher in the Architecture Department of the Istanbul Higher Technical School.
This institution later became the Istanbul State Engineering and Architecture Academy, and today continues its educational activities under the name Yıldız Technical University.
