CONTEMPORARY TURKISH PAINTERS

Yiğit Yazıcı

Wo is Yiğit Yazıcı? (1969-Bursa)

H. Yiğit Yazıcı is a contemporary Turkish artist whose artistic practice spans more than three decades. Born in Bursa in 1969, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul in 1992.

Since the early 1990s, Yazıcı has developed a distinctive visual language that combines painting, typography, symbols, memory, and everyday objects. His works explore universal themes such as happiness, human connection, personal transformation, and the search for meaning. Guided by his long-standing motto, “Happiness is a Choice,” he seeks to create works that transcend cultural boundaries and communicate through color, emotion, and visual storytelling.

Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, international art fairs, and special projects across Türkiye, the United States, Italy, France, Thailand, Switzerland, Lebanon, Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. His works are included in major corporate and private collections, including those of leading institutions, international companies, museums, hotels, and collectors.

In addition to his studio practice, Yazıcı has developed interdisciplinary projects that bring art into public and everyday spaces, transforming functional objects into artistic experiences. He continues to live and work between Istanbul and Bodrum while expanding his international presence through exhibitions, collaborations, and cultural projects.

Artist Statement / Vision

My source of energy has always been sharing the excitement of my works with people. From my earliest years, observing and exploring my surroundings led me naturally toward art. My first works, created with limited knowledge of material and technique, were born from a desire to conquer the world. Despite their simplicity, they were crucial in sustaining me during times when I felt weak and helpless. As I matured, I understood that art was more than color and light. It became a way of defining emotions, patterns of thought, and the search for perfection in nature. This realization transformed art into my way of life, a philosophy of existence, and a continuous search for self-understanding. Alongside painting, music and other arts also remain central to my practice, enriching the emotional depth of my work. One of my main ambitions is to create art that transcends cultural and traditional barriers, addressing universal anxieties, emotions, and fundamental human questions. My aim is to reach out to people of different cultures and make them think through symbols, colors, and forms.

A Glance to Some Paintings by Yiğit Yazıcı For New York Exhibition, November 14, 2012 Türker Armaner
“Once an artwork is created, a portion of the physical world, that is, a part of the sensible, natural, mechanical realm is appropriated by the human consciousness. Every artwork, whether it is literature, architecture, sculpture, a musical composition, or a painting, is the representation of the reality which dwells in a historical context. … In Yiğit’s paintings one observes the deserted objects, as if abandoned to their fates, reflecting the actual movement in its potentiality, infinity in its finiteness and fullness in a void.”
(Türker Armaner, 1968, literary author and philosopher, teaches philosophy at Galatasaray University, lives in Istanbul.)
Jeff Lawson (Founder, UNTITLED Art Fair, Miami; Principal, Jeff Lawson Associates Inc., New York)

“I met Yigit Yazici in 2008 in Art Asia Fair in Miami (now UNTITLED), of which I am the founder and owner. He was the focus of attention with his art and his ability to synthesize East and West.”
“His paintings are very dynamic and colorful.”
“Yigit Yazici, alongside his artistic abilities, is also an entrepreneur in creating successful art projects, easily adapting himself to social environments wherever he goes.”
Bernard Castaing (Retired Worldwide Vice President, Procter & Gamble; Art Collector, London & Paris)
“I visited Mr Yazici's studio in Istanbul and was struck by his originality in turning the simple objects of daily life into colourful and dynamic paintings. I bought a painting that day as I instantly understood his brilliant creative mind and painting mastery.”
“Later, I commissioned a portrait of myself and my wife by Mr Yazici. The result, now on the walls of our flat in London, is stunning, reflecting both our own personalities and his unique and unmistakable style. All of our friends and even our own children heaped praise on his work.”
“Yigit’s diverse artistic abilities are combined with his entrepreneurial ones, as evidenced by projects such as the sails for a large sailing boat or being selected as one of the Absolut Vodka artists.”

Tally Beck (Founder & Director, Tally Beck Contemporary, New York)
“I met the artist Yigit Yazici in Miami in 2007 when we were both participating in an art fair during Art Basel Miami. At that time, he was already notable in the international art world.”
“He had developed a signature style, including gestural elements and influences from Constructivism and typography.”
“I produced his painting show Oksijen in 2010, and it was the first exhibition of Turkish art in the history of Thailand.”
“His subsequent show at my gallery in New York, Nobody's Business But the Turk's, drew large crowds and paved the way for successful showings in Miami, San Francisco, Houston and Los Angeles.”
“Yazici's work has reached an even higher level of international fame. He is certainly an artist who is at the top of his profession as his work is visible at art fairs and group shows internationally.”
