CLASSICS TURKISH PAINTERS

Vildan Gizer

Who was Vildan Gizer (1889 Istanbul – 1974 Istanbul)?

Vildan Gizer is one of the artists who, during the transition to the early Republic, stood between the cultural circles of the late Ottoman period and the art environment of the Republican era. She is particularly known for her portrait work, although her production was limited. Her place in art history is evaluated through her strong cultural background, portrait-focused production, and relationship with the art circles of the time.

Vildan Gizer was born in Istanbul in 1889. She came from a family with a strong tradition in art and culture.
Her grandfather was Osman Bey, known as “Printer Osman Bey,” who served in the Ottoman palace. Osman Bey held the position of Chief Chamberlain during the reign of Abdul Hamid II and was also one of the first to print the Quran in the Ottoman Empire. Her father, Ömer Vasfi Bey (1864–1895), started as a painter and calligrapher. This cultural environment allowed Vildan Gizer to become acquainted with art early on. The artist later received medical training and became a knowledgeable doctor. Her artistic development was influenced by Hikmet Gizer, who was also a relative of Tevfik Fikret. Her contact with cities like Vienna and Berlin, due to her husband’s job, broadened her cultural horizons. Vildan Gizer began her art education with private lessons. She took painting lessons from the Italian painter Salvatore Valeri, who was employed at the academy. This training enabled her to gain a strong technical foundation in the field of figure painting and portraiture. She focused particularly on portraiture, emphasizing psychological expression through the human face and character.

Artistic Perspective;
Elements that stand out in her artistic understanding:
• Portrait-centered figurative approach
• Seeking psychological depth
• Emphasis on observation
• Unpretentious, internal language of expression
The artist considered portraiture not only as physical resemblance but also as character analysis.

Relationship with the Art Environment of the Period;
Vildan Gizer was a contemporary and close friend of Müfide Kadri, one of the first female painters of the Ottoman Empire, who died at a young age. This relationship demonstrates the artist's place within the female artist circles of the period.

Exhibitions and Characteristics of Her Artistic Life;
One of the most striking aspects of the artist is that, despite producing work, her works:
• Not exhibited

Her pastel and oil paintings were strengthened by her daughters, Hilkat and Rikkat Hanım.
