Teoman Südor

Who was Teoman Südor? (1943–September 10, 2024)

Teoman Südor (1943–September 10, 2024) is considered one of the most prolific and original representatives of the second generation of Turkish painting after the Republic. In his works, Südor takes the viewer on an intellectual and sensory journey through nature, mythology, time-space relationships, original images, and symbolic expressions. He was also a lecturer, a master engraver, and an internationally recognized artist.

His Life:

Teoman Südor was born in Istanbul in 1943. He began his art education at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, Painting Department – Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu Workshop, graduating in 1968; here he received training in contemporary painting language through academic and workshop-based studies.

Between 1968 and 1970, he worked as an assistant to Ercüment Kalmık and Sabri Berkel at the Kadıköy School of Architecture and Engineering. He then went to Italy, where he studied language in Perugia; subsequently, he pursued basic design and doctoral studies at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts (1970–1974).

Südor, particularly by assimilating the classical understanding of Renaissance art within Italian culture, integrated the figurative and spatial approaches of this period into his own artistic language. In 1985, he completed his proficiency in art at Istanbul Technical University; until his retirement in 2006, he taught painting, basic art education, plastic arts, original printmaking, and drawing at the Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Architecture.

Throughout his artistic life, Südor shared art and life with his wife, Gülseren Südor, and continued his artistic production until his final years; the versatility of his career resonated in both teaching and production.

Art Perspective;
Teoman Südor's art represents a unique visual understanding centered on the transformation of the concrete into the abstract and the abstract back into the concrete. He underwent a stylistic shift in the 1980s; this change was not a break, but rather the result of a search for new avenues of expression within the continuity of the past.

Südor's work is characterized by the following trends:
• Nature, the earth-sky relationship: Natural areas such as the earth, sky, underwater, and underground are in dialogue with each other around the figures.

• Mythology and legend: He created his own unique "legend" with imagery nourished by Anatolian culture and the creation myths of humanity.

• Symbolism and metaphorical expression: Stones, water, clouds, mountains, and various objects are depicted with symbolic meanings, detached from everyday reality.

• Light and color: Südor used light as a highly thoughtful element; he established dynamic but balanced relationships between color, shape, and line.

These elements transform his works into compositions that offer intellectual journeys — inviting the viewer not only to a visual experience but also to a metaphysical intellectual inquiry.

Teoman Südor has maintained a highly active exhibition practice throughout his artistic career; participating in numerous solo and group events both in Turkey and abroad.
