Who was Sami Lim? (1905 – 1986)
Sami Lim, one of the important artists of the Republican era in Turkish painting, is known especially for his Impressionist-influenced landscape paintings and his thoughts on art theory. In his paintings, he depicted nature, seasons, Anatolian cities, and scenes of daily life; he also advocated the importance of mathematical ratios in painting composition. Lim placed great emphasis on the Golden Ratio principle in his works and, by studying the ratio systems used by Renaissance artists, tried to apply this aesthetic understanding to Turkish painting. Throughout his artistic life, he participated in various exhibitions and expressed his thoughts on painting through his writings.
His Life and Education:
Sami Lim was born in 1905. Interested in painting from a young age, the artist entered the School of Fine Arts (Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi), one of the most important art institutions of the time.
He studied there between 1919 and 1923. At the academy, he took lessons from important painters of the time, including Hikmet Onat and İbrahim Çallı.
These artists are considered important representatives of the modernization process in Turkish painting. Sami Lim’s approach to painting also reflects the influence of these artists. Thanks to his education at the academy, he gained a strong technical foundation in the use of color, observation of nature, and composition.
Sami Lim passed away in 1986. After his death, his works were rediscovered in various exhibitions, making his place in the history of Turkish painting even more prominent.
Professional Life;
After completing his art education, Sami Lim worked in state institutions. He worked for many years in the Turkish Republic State Railways and retired from there after approximately thirty years of service. For him, painting was not only a profession but also a field of research and expression. While continuing his civil service duties, he did not stop producing art and continued to paint regularly. The artist also established connections with art circles, was active within the Fine Arts Association, and participated in various group exhibitions.
Artistic Journeys and Observations of Anatolia;
As part of the "Homeland Tours" organized during the Republican era to allow artists to get to know Anatolia, Sami Lim also traveled to Anatolia. During these trips, he had the opportunity to examine Kars and its surroundings in particular. These travels played an important role in the artist's understanding of painting. The natural structure, climate, and rural life of Anatolia became frequent themes in his paintings. In the artist's works, subjects such as Anatolian villages, rural landscapes, nature, and seasonal changes hold an important place.

Sami Lim's artistic approach is based on observation of nature, light effects, and compositional order.
Impressionist approach;
The artist has used a pictorial language with impressionistic influences in his works. This approach is particularly based on reflecting the changes of light on nature and the momentary atmosphere.
In Lim's paintings, the appearance of nature at different times and in different seasons is carefully depicted. Soft color transitions and natural light effects are important features of the artist's style.

His works include:

and other subjects reflecting natural and daily life. These paintings generally have a calm and balanced atmosphere.
Golden Ratio and composition;
One of the most striking features of Sami Lim's art is the importance he gives to compositional order. The artist has particularly worked on the mathematical ratio system known as the Golden Ratio.
This system is used to create aesthetic harmony and visual balance in works of art. Lim attempted to construct compositions in his paintings according to these proportions and discussed this topic in detail in his writings on art. In this respect, Sami Lim is considered not only an artist who painted, but also a theorist who reflected on art.
