Within the scope of the 100th anniversary of the Republic, the Italian Cultural Center (Istanbul), in cooperation with the Italian Embassy and the Municipality of Rome, organizes a workshop focusing on the works of Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica, who created some of Atatürk's most famous sculptures, in the first years of the Republic of Turkey.


As part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the Republic of Turkey, the Italian Cultural Center, which returns to the first years of the young republic by making a retrospective on Italy-Turkey cultural relations, organizes the "Pietro Canonica and Atatürk" workshop, focusing on the Italian presence in the early years of the Republic of Turkey. The equestrian statue of Atatürk in the square in front of Ankara Ethnography Museum (1927) and the statue of Atatürk in marshal uniform in Zafer Square (1927); Four of our country's most well-known Atatürk statues, including the Republic Monument (1928) in Taksim Square in Istanbul, which he signed together with Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri, and the equestrian statue of Atatürk in Cumhuriyet Square in Izmir (1932), bear the signature of Canonica.

The "Pietro Canonica and Atatürk" workshop, organized by the Italian Cultural Center in cooperation with the Italian Embassy and the Municipality of Rome, will take place on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the Casa di Italia Theater in the Italian Cultural Center. In the workshop, which focused on the history and realization of these works created by Pietro Canonica and ordered by Atatürk himself in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, experts from Turkey and Italy examined the sculptor's works from an urban, architectural and artistic perspective determined by his influence on the Turkish cultural panorama of those years. will discuss it from various aspects.

The “Pietro Canonica and Atatürk” workshop will start at 10.00 with the opening speeches of Italian Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, Rome Municipality Undersecretary of Culture Miguel Gotor and Istanbul Italian Cultural Center Director Salvatore Schirmo. In the first part of the workshop, which will start at 10.45 and be moderated by Luis Miguel Selvelli from the Levantine Cultural Heritage Foundation, Carla Scicchitano, İlber Ortaylı, Silvia Pedone, Luca Orlandi and Aylin Tekiner will take part as speakers. In the second session, which will be held at 14.30, Francesco Pongiluppi, Mevlüt Çelebi, Özlem İnay Erten, Davide Deriu, Burcu Pelvanoğlu, Luca J. Senatore, Marco Carpiceci and Fabio Colonnese will come together under the moderation of Baha Tanman from Istanbul University.
The workshop, where the speeches will be held with simultaneous translation in Italian and Turkish, will end with a tour of the Taksim Republic Monument under the guidance of Luca Orlandi and Burcu Pelvanoğlu, following the question-answer session.

The “Pietro Canonica and Atatürk” workshop, which will be held at the Italian Cultural Center on Friday, November 3, 2023, is open to everyone free of charge, without registration.
