The Painter Who Interpreted Anatolian Memory with a Naive Painting Language
Her Life and Artistic Identity;
Oya Zaim Katoğlu was a Turkish painter born in Istanbul in 1940. She graduated from the Department of Art History at Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History and Geography. Her Artistic Vision, Themes and Style;
In Oya Katoğlu’s paintings, Anatolian culture, traditional house architecture, town life, and folkloric elements hold a prominent place. The artist particularly addresses the theme of the house as a visual representation of cultural identity. According to research, Katoğlu’s works highlight:
• Turkish folk culture lifestyles
• Traditional decorative motifs
• The architectural texture of Anatolian towns
• Folkloric visual memory
The artist’s painting language combines the naive painting tradition with a plastic expression reminiscent of miniature aesthetics. However, this approach is not purely nostalgic; it contains a contemporary visual interpretation.
Architectural forms are mostly treated with warm color relationships, simple perspective, and a decorative surface understanding. This approach places Katoğlu in a special position among artists who visualize cultural memory in modern Turkish painting.
