CONTEMPORARY TURKISH PAINTERS

Ömer Muz

Who is Ömer Muz? (1957-Istanbul)

Known as one of the distinctive figures of Turkish painting, Ömer Muz was born in Istanbul on August 28, 1957. He himself says that he lives in his own inner world within the art world and often comes to the fore with his media activities. With an artistic background spanning nearly half a century, Muz leaves the decision of whether he is an artist to historians and critics, tending to see himself outside this definition.

Ömer Muz was born into a poor family in Istanbul. Raised in a shantytown, Muz had a difficult yet hopeful childhood with his father, one of Istanbul’s last horse-drawn carriage drivers, and his mother, who was illiterate. One of the most significant turning points in Muz’s life was the recognition and support of his artistic talent by his middle school art teacher. In financial difficulties, Muz began a small-time business by painting his friends’ paintings to support his school expenses.

His education was interrupted by his involvement in political events and subsequent expulsion from school. Muz, who had no academic career, entered the art world at a young age to earn a living and support his family.

He took his first steps into his professional artistic career by illustrating storybooks at a publishing house in Cağaloğlu.

His father, a conservative Anatolian Muslim, created a certain pressure on Muz’s artistic development. His father, due to the negative image of a neighborhood artist, discouraged Muz from pursuing his artistic path. However, despite this pressure, Muz continued to pursue his own artistic path.

Muz, who did not receive an academic education, describes himself as a self-taught painter. He expanded his knowledge through intensive reading in various fields, particularly philosophy, history, archaeology, and anthropology. This independent learning process allowed his art to reflect a deep cultural and intellectual heritage.

Ömer Muz’s personal life reflects a journey filled with challenges that shaped his work and artistic expression. It could be argued that the intense emotional and thematic depth in his works stems from the artist’s struggle to express himself and shape his own reality through art, a struggle that has been the source of his work.

Ömer Muz is an artist who gained experience in various fields before embarking on his artistic career. In his youth, he gained diverse professional experience by working as an assembly worker in a polyester workshop and as a laborer in a workshop where Plexiglas lampshades were made. These experiences helped him acquire practical skills and knowledge about working with different materials. However, a workplace accident that left him unable to paint for a period of time marked a turning point in his career. This event led Muz to focus entirely on art and to decide not to pursue other careers.

Ömer Muz's artistic approach and career path have been enriched by transitioning between various artistic disciplines. In 1976, he first created comics and cover illustrations for Science Fiction, fantasy, and horror literature publications published by various publishing houses in Germany through international agencies. Later, between 1979 and 1993, he worked for various media outlets and publishing houses in Turkey, creating comics, novel covers, covers for children's magazines, and graphic and illustration designs for film posters. The experiences he gained during this period influenced the techniques he later employed when transitioning to painting.

Muz, who began his artistic career as a publication illustrator in the 1970s, made significant contributions to the film industry, particularly through his Turkish-language posters for foreign films. Throughout the 1970s, Muz's hundreds of film posters served to introduce foreign cinema to Turkish audiences. The posters he drew during this period include cult films such as "The Last Emperor" (1987), "E.T. (1982), "Alien" (1979), "Friday the 13th" (1980), and "Robocop (1987).

Muz also made an impact in the comic book industry, establishing himself by creating cover illustrations for famous comic book series such as Conan the Barbarian, Texas, Tommiks, Bob Croquette, and Pekos Bill. He reached young readers with his cover illustrations for children's publications such as Milliyet Çocuk, contributing to their imaginations. With these works, he demonstrated his artistic talents across a wide range, becoming a prominent figure in both the visual arts and cultural production processes.

Muz employed various painting techniques in these works, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. This variety of techniques contributed to the development of the artist's ability to use color and create texture, evident in his works. Furthermore, his experience working with plastic materials shaped his approach to material selection in his overall artistic practice.

This adventure can be considered a significant phase that diversified Muz's art and honed his mastery of different forms of artistic expression. These experiences provided a comprehensive background that nourished the aesthetic and technical richness in his work. In particular, the attention to detail and compositional skill inherent in Muz's art, blended with these diverse experiences, are evident. This process allowed him to be recognized not only as a painter but also as a versatile artist.

The exhibitions Ömer Muz organized throughout his artistic career demonstrate his artistic development and the diversity of his expressions. His exhibition history has been enriched by a wide range of events held in various cities in Türkiye and abroad.

He deepened his artistic practice with exhibitions such as "ISTANBUL", "ANOTHOLE OF ME" (AN ANATOLIA), and "NAMELESS" (UNNAMELESS) in December 2019. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, he continued to keep his artistic expression current with the exhibition "BANA BİL İSTANBUL GAZIM" (I NEED AN ISTANBUL) at Biriz Art Gallery.

However, this exhibition was his last and coincided with an unfortunate period of the pandemic. Nevertheless, these exhibitions reflect Ömer Muz's artistic journey and his passion for Istanbul-themed works. The evolution of the artist's work can be traced through these exhibitions, and they are an important resource for understanding his influence and contributions to the Turkish art world.

Ömer Muz's Artistic Perspective;

Ömer Muz defines himself as an impressionist painter. The distinctive characteristics of his art are reflected in his environmentally sensitive depiction of the urban landscape. He often produces works that highlight Istanbul's historical structures and offer a critical perspective on unplanned urbanization.
Muz generally adopts a landscape and documentary style in his paintings. This approach reflects his artistic style as a witness to his time and his environmental sensitivity. In his paintings, the artist strives to preserve Istanbul's historic skyline, ignoring unplanned urban development and skyscrapers.

Ömer Muz's embrace of his identity as a landscape artist developed as he witnessed Istanbul's rapidly changing urban landscape. The artist made this decision in the early 1990s, when he deeply felt the need to preserve Istanbul's historical and cultural heritage. For Muz, landscape art is not only an aesthetic choice, but also an effort to preserve and record.

Ömer Muz prefers to work both directly inspired by nature and through photographs in his artwork. He states that he finds it enjoyable to go out in nature during pleasant weather conditions and paint by directly observing environmental details. However, he also emphasizes that he mostly uses photographs for practical reasons.

He states that working directly is impractical, especially in busy and crowded areas, such as Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. He also touches on the challenges of painting in crowded environments; he states that the gathering of curious crowds and the constant interruptions with questions complicate the working process.
Such situations often led Muz to turn to photography.

The artist emphasizes that working from photographs is common in contemporary art practice and that this method offers artists a more controlled working environment. However, Muz viewed the use of photography not as a restriction, but as an integral part of the creative process, using photographs as a tool to develop his own creative vision. For Muz, photographs are merely a starting point. He emphasizes that the true artistic process comes from reinterpreting and deepening these images through his own understanding of color. The artist describes his use of color as a deeply personal and emotional process. For him, colors are not merely visual aesthetics but also a tool that reflects his inner states and environmental interactions. He tends to use dark and intense colors in his paintings, particularly during periods when he is emotionally or socially affected. He states that this occurs as an internal reaction rather than a conscious choice, and that his awareness of these colors often develops spontaneously during the work process. Vibrant and striking colors are used to emphasize specific areas in Muz's compositions as a way of creating meaning, and are strategically chosen to draw the viewer's eye to their focus. Technically, Muz works with a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. This technical diversity allows him to maintain a flexible artistic practice and helps him explore various forms of artistic expression. Watercolor techniques, in particular, have been among the techniques Muz has used most frequently and spent the most time on since his time as a print artist.

Diversity and technical mastery are at the forefront of Ömer Muz's artistic practice. Watercolor, the technique he spent most of his time with throughout his artistic career and which he considers his true birth, has been a fundamental method shaping his art. Watercolor is a medium he used extensively, especially during his time as a print artist, and the artist's profound knowledge and experience with this technique are evident in his works.
