CLASSICS TURKISH PAINTERS

Nezir Aydın

Who was Nezir Aydın? (1965 Giresun – 2021)

Nezir Aydın was born in Bulancak, Giresun in 1965. The natural atmosphere of the Black Sea left significant marks on his visual memory from his childhood years. Turning to painting in his early youth, the artist pursued art education due to his interest in the relationship between form and color.
He graduated from the Painting Department of the Faculty of Education at Ondokuz Mayıs University in 1986. During his university years, he focused on both contemporary Turkish painting and abstract and experimental art approaches. During his education, he particularly conducted studies on abstract expression, surface composition, sign language, and the effects of symbolic structures in painting.
Nezir Aydın, who pursued a professional art career from 1986 onwards, participated in numerous group exhibitions, art fairs, workshops, and biennials both domestically and internationally. Throughout his artistic life, he maintained close relationships with art circles in Istanbul and Ankara; he was particularly regarded among artists in contemporary Turkish painting whose experimental and intellectual aspects were prominent. The artist continued his production in his own studio for many years. His paintings not only featured visual expression but also… He developed layered references to memory, time, the subconscious, writing, symbols, and human history.
Nezir Aydın, who passed away in 2021, left behind a significant legacy of production that created a unique language in contemporary Turkish painting.

His Artistic Approach:
Nezir Aydın’s painting is based on abstract expression, sign language, pictographic elements, and intellectual depth. For the artist, painting is not merely a visual object; it is the surface manifestation of memory, the subconscious, and intuitive thought.
He defined his art with these words:
“In my paintings, I use signs that both destroy and create each other. Sometimes an ancient magic, sometimes a pictogram from Central Asia, blends with the Latin alphabet.”
This approach clearly reveals the multi-layered structure seen in his works. Writings, symbols, letters, and signs abandon their meanings and transform into the plastic elements of the painting.
The artist also argued that painting is not a structure that directly creates a narrative, but rather a field that “traces the inexpressible.” Therefore, intuitive associations take center stage in his works instead of a definite narrative.

Overall Assessment:

Nezir Aydın's art is a poetic pictorial universe built upon silence, memory, time, and the collective subconscious of humanity. His paintings evoke thought rather than explanation; they possess a structure that suggests rather than directly shows.
The signs, layers, and symbols on the surface constitute the artist's unique visual language, developed in relation to human history, cultural memory, and individual experiences.
Considered among the artists who deepened the intellectual dimension of abstract expression in contemporary Turkish painting after 1980, Nezir Aydın has left a lasting mark on Turkish painting with his experimental approach and poetic aesthetic.
