CLASSICS TURKISH PAINTERS

Nevin Edhem Hamdi

Who was Nevin Edhem Hamdi (1910–1931):

An Early Republican Painter Who Continued the Artistic Legacy of Osman Hamdi Bey
Nevin Edhem Hamdi (July 10, 1910–June 17, 1931), as the granddaughter of Osman Hamdi Bey, was a figurative painter who lived and produced works in the early Republican period of Turkish painting. Her artistic works and pieces have a figurative narrative language bearing the traces of the classical painting tradition, and she is known as one of the first female artists whose works were included in the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum’s inventory records.

Her Life and Artist Family;
Nevin Edhem Hamdi was born on July 10, 1910. Her father was Edhem Eldem; her grandfather was Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910), one of the founders of modern painting, museology, and archaeology in Turkey. The works and artistic practice of Osman Hamdi Bey have had a transformative impact on Turkish art history, and Nevin Edhem Hamdi is also part of this artistic tradition.

Unfortunately, Nevin Edhem Hamdi passed away at a very young age, on June 17, 1931, at the age of 21, due to tuberculosis; therefore, her artistic production was cut short.

Art Life and Works;
One of Nevin Edhem Hamdi’s known works is registered in the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum collection as “Portrait of a Woman.” Although this work was recorded in the museum inventory for a long time as “N. Edhem Hamdi,” the artist’s identity was confirmed thanks to art historians and academic research. Thus, the work is included in the museum collection under the artist’s real name.

Research has shown that the artist produced figurative portraits using the oil on canvas technique, and that there were instances where these unique works were confused with those of other artists of the period. In her works, the characteristic lines and emotional intensity of the human figure are particularly prominent.
Furthermore, her artistic production is documented in various institutional collections, including charcoal sketchbooks and drawings, as well as examples of drawings featured in exhibitions; these works reveal the artist’s technical mastery and power of observation.

Themes, Style, and Artistic Perspective in Her Art;

Nevin Edhem Hamdi's works focus on the figurative approach to human portraiture and the expression of individual emotions. The prominent trends in the artist's artistic language are:
• Figurative depiction: The human figure forms the narrative center of the painting and connects character with emotion. • Emotional intensity: In portraits, facial expressions, gazes, and compositional arrangements establish an emotional connection with the viewer. • Technical discipline: Drawing and painting techniques inspired by classical painting techniques point to the artist's educational background. • Female artist perspective: Her inclusion among female artists in the early Republican period allows us to consider the connotations of figurative painting in both individual and social contexts.
These characteristics reveal that Nevin Edhem Hamdi sought both emotional and formal balance in her paintings.

Artistic Heritage;
The most well-known work by Nevin Edhem Hamdi is "Portrait of a Woman," housed in the collection of the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture. This work has gone down in art history as the artist's first and perhaps only known oil portrait.

Furthermore, some of her drawings and sketches have been identified in private collections and academic publications, and have been examined by art historians in their studies on the production of female artists in the early Republican period.

As the granddaughter of Osman Hamdi Bey, Nevin Edhem Hamdi painted portraits of artists who were influenced by the modern painting tradition of Rusum. Despite her short life, her works have become known through both scholarly research and museum collections, and have become important data points in art history. Her works are considered original examples that enriched the perspective of female artists in figurative painting during the early Republican period.
