His Life:
Nejat Akkan was born on December 30, 1935, in Saray (Turkey). He entered the world of painting at a young age by receiving his first art education; his relationship with art began during his school years and with village institute-based education.
Akkan received his initial basic education at Kepirtepe Village Institute, then completed the Painting Seminar at Çapa Teacher Training School, and graduated from the Painting Department of Ankara Gazi Education Institute between 1958 and 1961.
This period, intertwined with art, laid the groundwork for her to transform her quest for self-expression into a disciplined art practice. This background of formal and informal education shaped Akkan into both a prolific artist and a competent educator.
Educator and Academic Career:
Akkan contributed to the systematic teaching of printmaking and graphic art in the Turkish art scene through her role as an educator. Between 1963 and 1966, she worked as a painting teacher and assistant principal at the Adana Girls’ Teacher Training School; subsequently, she served as a lecturer and assistant principal at the Diyarbakır Education Institute.
In 1966, she took a step forward in her educational career by passing the graphic assistantship exam at the Istanbul Applied Fine Arts High School. That same year, she was appointed as the founding teacher of the Painting Department at the İzmir Buca Girls' Education Institute (İzmir Buca Faculty of Education); she was awarded a certificate of appreciation for this contribution. Throughout the 1970s, she taught printmaking and graphic art there.
Akkan worked as a teacher and freelance artist in Cologne, Germany, between 1981 and 2001. During this period, he also pursued his studies in the Graphic Design Department at the Cologne Academy of Fine Arts between 1987 and 1994, expanding both his artistic production and knowledge. After retiring in 2001, he moved to the Montabaur region of Koblenz, where he continued his artistic work and research activities in Europe. Since 2005, he has also had a studio in Izmir.
