Mustafa Horasan

Who is Mustafa Horasan? (1965 – May 27, 2026)
A Powerful and Striking Representative of Figurative Expressionism in Turkish Painting

His Life;
Mustafa Horasan was born in Aydın-Karacasu in 1965. He completed his primary and secondary education in İzmir. The artist, who spent his childhood and youth in the social and cultural atmosphere of the Aegean, developed an interest in painting from an early age.

In 1986, he graduated from Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Graphic Arts, Original Printmaking Section. During his academy years, he focused on drawing, figure, printmaking, and contemporary art understanding. Throughout his education, he attracted attention with his works, especially those he developed on figurative expression and expressionist approach.

From the mid-1980s onwards, he began to be considered among the prominent young artists in contemporary Turkish painting. Throughout his artistic life, he carried out artistic works in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, the USA, and Italy; he established close relationships with international art circles. Mustafa Horasan played an active role in the art world not only through his productions but also as an educator. He served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Maltepe University for a period, contributing to the development of young artists. The artist is considered among the figurative painters of the generation including Mehmet Uygun, İrfan Önürmen, Temür Köran, Serdar Şencan, Alp Tamer Ulukılıç, and Altan Çelem. Mustafa Horasan’s works are included in many private collections, museums, and institutional collections in Turkey and abroad.

Furthermore, one of his works is in the permanent collection exhibition of Istanbul Modern. Throughout his life, Horasan developed a unique pictorial language centering on the spiritual tensions, fears, loneliness, and bodily deformations of contemporary man, achieving a strong and distinctive position in contemporary Turkish painting. The artist lost his life in a motorcycle accident on May 27, 2026.

Artistic Approach;
Mustafa Horasan's art; His work is based on figurative expressionism, grotesque narrative, psychological tension, and questioning of the human body.
The artist approaches the human body in a way that deviates from classical aesthetic understanding. His figures are often deformed, fragmented, tense, and sometimes transformed into animalistic forms. This approach includes psychological analyses of the inner world of modern man.
In Horasan's paintings:
• Loneliness
• Anxiety
• Violence
• Alienation
• Psychological Conflict
• Existential Tension are intensely felt.
The artist treats the figure not only as an anatomical structure but also as a carrier of the subconscious, trauma, and internal conflicts. Therefore, in his works, the body often displays a fragmented, distorted, or transformed appearance.
Mustafa Horasan's paintings sometimes carry a surrealist atmosphere. However, this surrealism is not romantic; it is darker, more psychological, and disturbing. An intense dramatic tension reminiscent of Francis Bacon is felt in his works.
Themes and Technical Characteristics;
Figurative Expressionism;
The human figure is at the center of Horasan's art. However, this figure is far from classical anatomical beauty. The artist makes the fragility of the human soul visible through deformation.
Psychological Tension;
The artist's works intensely reflect the subconscious fears, traumas, and psychological conflicts of the human being.
Grotesque and Organic Structures;
Organic surfaces where human and animal forms intertwine, bony structures, and biological associations are fundamental elements of the artist's pictorial language.
Use of Color;
Red, brown, black, and dark tones are frequently seen in Horasan's paintings. This dramatic color approach strengthens the psychological impact of the works.
Large-Scale Compositions;
The artist often worked on large canvases. Large surfaces make the effect of the figures more striking.
Printmaking Discipline;
Horasan, who received training in original printmaking, shows the influence of the printmaking discipline in his linear structure and understanding of surfaces.
