Artistic Perspective;

In these productions, which question the disciplinary effect of social expectations and normative judgments on the female body, the body is not only an aesthetic form but also a field of psychological struggle. As Michel Foucault pointed out in his concept of “Docile Bodies,” the body, which is tried to be shaped and tamed by power and society, carries the weight of these external impositions in the works. In this context, “hair” ceases to be merely a physical extension; it transforms into a symbol of the invisible weight imposed on the body, the unbreakable bonds, and the state of “not being able to be oneself.” Sometimes, the thick braids enveloping the body make the social burden visible, and sometimes, through reflections, they reveal identity alienation and suppressed words. However, despite all attempts at conformity and intervention, the resolute expression in the portraits shows the inner resistance of the figures. Hair, one of the most manipulated elements on the human body, continues to grow back, returning to its natural form, despite all the cuts. At this point, Spinoza’s concept of Conatus (the effort to remain in existence and resist) comes into play: the effort of every being to preserve its essence and maintain its existence, the regrowth of cut hair, becomes a physiological metaphor for the woman’s instinct to return to her own nature and defend her existence despite imposed patterns. The works aim to make visible the tension between social domination and vital resistance through the figure and hair.
