Kadri Atamal

Who was Kadri Atamal? (1901 Istanbul – 1993 Istanbul)

Kadri Atamal, one of the important representatives of early Republican era Turkish painting, was particularly influential in the development of the İzmir art scene with his identity as a painter, decorator, educator, and founder of a cultural institution. The artist left a lasting cultural legacy with both his works and his efforts in art education and institutionalization.

Family, Birth, and Early Education Years;
Kadri Atamal was born in Istanbul in 1901 as the son of Hatice Atiye and Mehmet Bahattin. He began his education at the Afitab Maarif School in Beşiktaş, and then completed Istanbul Sultani.
He continued his art education at the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (Academy of Fine Arts), the most important art institution of the Ottoman Empire. Here, he worked in the studios of:
İbrahim Çallı
Hikmet Onat, and gained a solid technical foundation shaped by the academic painting tradition and Impressionist influences.

Munich Education and Artistic Circle;
Atamal continued his education in Germany between 1920 and 1924, studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München. There, he worked in the studio of the renowned artist and thinker Hans Hofmann. During this period, he was associated with artists who would later hold significant positions in Turkish modern painting:
• Zeki Kocamemi
• Ali Avni Çelebi
• Mahmut Cuda
These artists later became part of art circles that would influence the development of Turkish modern art.

Settlement in İzmir and His Teaching Career;
Atamal settled in İzmir in 1927 and took an active role in the city’s art and education life. Institutions where he taught painting:
• İzmir Boys’ Teacher Training School
• First Boys’ High School (Atatürk High School)
• Namık Kemal High School
• Karşıyaka Girls’ Teacher Training School
• Gazi Middle School
During this period, he made significant contributions to the development of art education in İzmir.

Establishment of the İzmir Painting and Sculpture Gallery;
On September 9, 1952, at the behest of Halil Dikmen, the Director General of Fine Arts, he established the İzmir Painting and Sculpture Gallery within Kültürpark. Atamal:
• Became the founder of the gallery
• Was appointed as the director
• Ensuring the gallery's relocation to a new location on Birinci Kordon a year later
This initiative is considered a turning point in the institutionalization of art in İzmir.

Kadri Atamal generally adopted the impressionistic approach of the Çallı Generation.
