Who was İsmet Yurtseven? (1923-2010)
One of the most lyrical figures of 20th-century Turkish painting, İsmet Yurtseven (1923-2010) was an exceptional master who treated nature not merely as a landscape, but as an ontological entity and a feast of light.
His Life;
Born in Cihangir, Istanbul in 1923, Yurtseven’s artistic journey was shaped by a tragic event he experienced in his childhood. As a result of scarlet fever, he largely lost his hearing, shifting his connection with the outside world from his “hearing” center to his “seeing” center. This forced silence transformed into a deep visual library for Yurtseven, where he read the world through colors and forms.
The Bosphorus, which he observed from his home in Cihangir, became his first and most loyal teacher. His in-depth readings on the art psychology and philosophy of the time during his academic education crowned his technical skill with an intellectual foundation.
His Artistic Understanding;
Yurtseven’s style is a unique milestone in Turkish painting that can be defined as “Lyric Impressionism.” His art can be understood through three fundamental pillars:
1. Structural Light: Although the artist adopted the light play of French Impressionism, he preferred to construct the object with light rather than dissolving it in light. The constructive discipline he took from André Lhote’s aesthetic in his early period forms a solid skeleton that is always felt beneath the free brushstrokes of his mature period.
2. Color Geometry: Influenced by the colorist and regional sensibility of the Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu school, Yurtseven combines the most transparent shades of blue with the dignified browns and purples of the earth.
3. Atmospheric Perspective: In his paintings, he paints not only the objects but also the atmosphere surrounding them. He displays a mastery of “sfumato” (hazy transition) that evokes the coolness of the water in a seascape or the scent of a flower in a still life. Ismet Yurtseven has proven his productivity not only in his studio but also on prestigious art platforms. Important milestones in his career include:
• Solo Exhibitions:
o 1989: Akbank Art Gallery, Istanbul (The most comprehensive retrospective of his mature period).
o 1990s: Solo exhibitions in prestigious galleries in Istanbul and Ankara, such as Galeri Baraz and Arda Art Gallery.
o 2000s: In the last decade of his life, he has met with art lovers through thematic exhibitions of a retrospective nature.
• Group and International Exhibitions:
o The artist has participated in group exhibitions held in world art centers such as Brussels, New York, and Paris, bringing the understanding of light and color in Turkish painting to international platforms.
o His works are included in numerous prestigious private collections both in Turkey and abroad, as well as in prestigious institutions such as the Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum and the National Library Collection. Thematic Range: Istanbul and Beyond
Yurtseven's themes seek rhythm within silence:
• Landscapes: The mansions of the Bosphorus, fishing boats, and the ancient spirit of Istanbul are transformed into urban memory records in his brush. • Still Lifes: The refraction of light on transparent objects, vases, and flowers is the pinnacle of the artist's technical mastery. • Figurative Compositions: Group studies of figures reflect the artist's understanding of rhythmic order and his respect for the human form.
His Last Years;
Ismet Yurtseven, who passed away in Istanbul on March 13, 2010, left behind a vast legacy of color. His death has been described as the end of an era of the search for "pure aesthetics" and romantic sensibility in Turkish painting. In conclusion, Ismet Yurtseven proved how a magnificent world can be created within silence without turning art into a tool of noise. His paintings maintain their place in Turkish art history as an "aesthetic haven" where modern man can find refuge amidst the complexities of life.
