İsmet Birsel

Who was İsmet Birsel? (1934–2017)

İsmet Birsel was born in Karşıyaka, İzmir in 1934. Beginning his education with a strong academic foundation, he graduated from the Art History department of Robert College in 1953. That same year, he went to France to continue his education and graduated from the Paris Faculty of Law in 1957.

In the 1950s, he began pursuing his painting studies alongside his legal education. During this period, he had the opportunity to work with Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu.

In 1958, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, beginning his diplomatic career and representing Turkey as an ambassador in various countries. However, he never abandoned his painting studies throughout his diplomatic career; artistic production remained a fundamental part of his life.

For a large part of his life, the artist created a unique balance between the two disciplines, producing work in both diplomacy and art. During his retirement, he continued his artistic production by focusing entirely on painting.

He passed away in 2017.

His book "Paintings in My Memory," published in 1991, is an important publication documenting his artistic memory and approach.

He has conducted studies on art history and the development of Turkish painting, and contributed to publications on collections and art history.

İsmet Birsel can be considered among the intellectual and observant figure painters in Turkish painting after the Republic.
