
Who was İbrahim Safi? (1898 – 1983)
İbrahim Safi is considered one of the important masters of 20th-century Turkish painting with Impressionist tendencies. He has carved out a unique place for himself in Turkish painting, particularly with his Istanbul landscapes, still lifes, and color understanding based on the effect of light.
His style, which combines Impressionism with academic discipline, has allowed his art to be evaluated in both traditional and modern lines.
His Life and Art Education;
Turkish Impressionist painter İbrahim Safi was born in 1898 in the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. He received his first art education during his years at Yerevan High School from his painting teacher Kolzsa and relatives who were academy graduates.
At a young age, he studied at the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts. During World War I, he came to Istanbul and settled there. In Istanbul, he entered the School of Fine Arts, worked in the studio of Namık İsmail, and graduated in 1923. After graduation, he continued his studies with Namık İsmail until 1930.
Despite the difficult conditions created by the war and revolution, Safi continued his art education and built his life entirely around painting. After settling in Turkey, he became one of the important figures in Turkish painting.
Having started painting in his youth, the artist displayed a prolific artistic identity throughout his life.
Artistic Development and International Studies:
He held his first solo exhibition in Istanbul in 1946.
After 1955, he conducted research for approximately 10 years in European art centers such as Switzerland, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Bonn, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Marseille, and Athens. This process contributed to the development of his technical and aesthetic language on an international scale.
Safi, working with Naci Kalmukoğlu, held many exhibitions both domestically and internationally.
Throughout his life, he earned his living through art, exhibiting an artist identity entirely based on production.
