Who is Hüseyin Sönmez? (1966-Kayseri)
He was born in Kayseri in 1966. He completed the Department of Painting at Gazi University, Faculty of Education, in 1985, in the workshop of Turan Erol and Cengiz Savaş. He was appointed as an art teacher to Diyarbakır Ergani Dicle Teachers’ High School. Like many village institutes, the school was established in a vast plain near the train station. The artist’s master’s thesis topic, trains, train stations and migration, was inspired by this geography. He worked as an art teacher at Tekirdağ Anatolian High School between 1989-1993. The artist was appointed as a lecturer at Mersin University, Faculty of Fine Arts in 1993. He received his art proficiency from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Fine Arts in 2003. He currently works as a professor at Mersin University. The artist, who has participated in many national and international exhibitions, has opened eighteen solo exhibitions and received two national awards.

Art Perspective;
The artist’s recent works can be classified under three headings. The first group consists of sketches and watercolors based on various environments, objects and nature observations, the second group consists of paintings on the theme of violence, mainly on canvas, cloth and waste paper, and the third group of works is generally portraits. The artist works on portraits of artists, intellectuals and pioneers who have a place in our personal and social cultural lives, such as Atatürk, Yaşar Kemal, Aşık Veysel, Neşet Ertaş and Kemal Sunal, especially his mother’s portrait. In these types of paintings, the artist generally works with mixed techniques on surfaces such as canvas, plywood, wood and wire winding coils, and mostly on worn and torn papers removed from billboards. According to the artist, the use of such waste materials not only gives positive messages for nature and life, but also strengthens the dramatic and artistic effect in his works. As in Hüseyin Sönmez’s sketches and watercolors, a lyrical, spotty and abstract approach based on nature, events and observations is generally dominant in his works on canvas, cloth and waste paper. The artist aims in his works as follows; just like Aşık Veysel’s Neşet Ertaş’s works, it expresses the search for words and language in its simplicity and depth.
