
Who is Halil Akdeniz? (1944-2024)
He was born in Antalya in 1944. He graduated from Ankara Gazi Education Institute, Department of Painting. He won the State International Specialization Exam scholarship and went to Germany. He received his undergraduate and specialist education at the Berlin State Academy of Fine Arts – HdK, Berlin (today’s Berlin University of Fine Arts). He received master’s, proficiency in art and doctorate degrees from Izmir Ege University and Izmir Dokuz Eylül University. He became an assistant professor in 1986, an associate professor in 1987, and a professor in 1994. He worked as a faculty member at Ankara Gazi Education Institute (today’s Gazi University), Ege University, Dokuz Eylül University, Bilkent University and Anadolu University. He founded the Painting and Fine Arts Departments at Ege, Dokuz Eylül and Bilkent Universities. He served in various positions at these universities, from department chairs, faculty board members, university senate and university executive board members. He served as the Cultural Advisor of the Turkish Embassy in Bonn and Berlin between 1996 and 2001, and as the Ministerial Advisor of the Ministry of Culture in 2001. He worked as a lecturer at Anadolu University Faculty of Fine Arts between 2001-2005. He established the science of art for the first time in Turkey and opened Art Theory and Criticism Master’s Programs at Anadolu University (2003) and Işık University (2008). He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Visual Arts at Işık University Faculty of Fine Arts and Head of the Department of Art Science at the Institute of Social Sciences in Istanbul. Halil Akdeniz is known for his works and research articles in the field of Contemporary Turkish Art. In the 1978s and 1980s, which was the source of his recent studies, “Visual Assessments of Izmir Bay Pollution, etc.” Art analyzes supported by scientific research on the physical environmental problems in the environments he lives in, starting with the TV series, continuing with the “Izmir Efes-Ören Visual Notes” series, and continuing with the work series covering different cultural regions of Anatolia, “Anatolian Civilizations-Intercultural”, “Anatolian Civilizations-Cultural Environment” focuses on “Anatolian Civilizations-Cultural Logos” and “Anatolian Civilizations-Cultural Balances”.
His works, which emerged during this process and include contemporary interpretations and artistic solutions using art and non-art elements, were included in many national and international exhibitions, biennials, triennials, art fairs and museum exhibitions. He was deemed worthy of awards in many national and international competitions, one of which was the International Gold Medal 1st Prize. He was honored with the title of State Artist by the Presidency for his achievements and contributions to Turkish Art. T.R. He was selected as the artist for the "Interior Artistic Evaluation Project" of the Presidential Mansion New Building and created the "Anatolian Civilizations-Intercultural" work on the library wall.
His works are included in domestic and international museums and collections. Akdeniz has two published books and catalog articles on Turkish Art and artists, as well as many scientific publications, research, declarations and articles. Halil Akdeniz is also a member of the International UNESCO-AIAP Plastic Arts Association and served as the President of the Ankara Representation of the Turkish National Committee for a while. . He is a member of UNESCO-AICA International Art Critics Association and also a founding member of AICA's Turkish National Committee. He was granted Academy "Honour/Honour" membership by the Senate of the Münster Art Academy, Germany. He passed away in Antalya on July 9, 2024. His grave is in Antalya, Kumluca, Güzören Village.
