CLASSICS TURKISH PAINTERS

Ercan Gülen

Who Was Ercan Gülen? (1932–2013)

Ercan Gülen is considered one of the leading figures in contemporary Turkish painting and printmaking. His unique reinterpretation of the linocut technique, both aesthetically and technically, has earned him a privileged place in the art world. Gülen’s work is shaped by an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the tradition of painting with printmaking; his contributions to the art scene as a teacher, administrator, and organizer are also noteworthy.

His Life and Artistic Development:
Ercan Gülen was born in Istanbul in 1932 and began his art education at a young age. He graduated from the Department of Painting at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, one of Turkey’s oldest art institutions, in 1960. While at the Academy, he joined Professor Nurullah Berk’s studio, absorbing both classical form and modernist expressive possibilities.

In 1968, he went to the USA to deepen his artistic journey. Here, he had the opportunity to see masterpieces of world art in museums in Boston, Milwaukee, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Baltimore, and between 1968 and 1976, he worked as a painting teacher and mural artist in various schools in the USA. During this period, he also held solo exhibitions.

Returning to Turkey in 1976, Gülen continued to utilize his international experience in the fields of art and education. Between 1987 and 1991, he taught art analysis courses at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Bilkent University and developed curricula in art education.

Gülen’s identity as a teacher became an integral part of his artistic production. His educational experience in the USA enriched his pedagogical approach, and upon his return to Turkey, he was recognized as a respected teacher in academic circles.

Gülen also played an active role in art organizations, serving as the President of the United Painters and Sculptors Association and publishing his own art newspaper. He viewed art not merely as a field of production, but as an interdisciplinary environment for thought.

Ercan Gülen's works are represented in the inventory of the Ankara Museum of Painting and Sculpture with many important pieces. These include examples from different periods such as Composition, Environment Twenty-One, Quotations from Sinan, Mapuanna (Portrait), and On the Beach.

Some of his works have been accepted into permanent museum collections through donations; this constitutes an official definition of the artist's place in contemporary art history.

Linocut printing holds a special place in Gülen's artistic production. This technique is a high-pressure printing method using carving and painting on linoleum sheets. The artist has produced original works in this field, particularly by adopting the "multi-color printing in a single block" technique — this approach creates a unique bridge between traditional printmaking and modern figurative expression.

The artist's works created using linoleum printing techniques generally focus on figurative themes; they often bear traces of Anatolian life; Kırkpınar wrestlers, mosques, caravanserais, and local motifs are the main narrative elements of these works.

Using the multi-color printing approach in his works since 1987, Gülen has blended the dynamic narrative of figures with visual balance, increasing the compositional power by limiting the number of colors. With this approach, he has transformed linoleum printing from a purely technical tool into a personal form of expression.

Artistic Perspective and Aesthetic Approach:

Ercan Gülen's artistic vision is shaped around the axis of expression through visual perspective, form, and color relationships. He views art not merely as individual production, but also as an interpretation of social memory and local culture.

According to the artist, a good painting should not only be about technical skill, but also about creating a structure that draws the viewer in through the balance and musical harmony of visual elements; the story itself is secondary, what matters is its transmission through visual language.

This perspective leads him to create a powerful visual rhythm in his works by combining form, line, and careful color planning. The figures in his prints and paintings bridge local themes with universal narratives.
