CONTEMPORARY TURKISH PAINTERS

Ebru Algül

Who is Ebru Algül? (1984-Edirne)

Born in Edirne in 1984, she worked as an arts and intelligence reporter for Anadolu Agency’s Istanbul, Edirne, and Tekirdağ regional directorates. She graduated from the Painting Department of Namık Kemal University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Design, and Architecture at the top of her faculty and department in 2023. That same year, she participated in the BASE 2023 selection. Algül, who continues her master’s degree with a thesis in the painting department at the same university, has had her work featured in national and international exhibitions.

Art Perspective:
Ebru Algül’s work is based on figurative narratives that question the relationship between humanity and society, nature, and herself. Symbols such as hands, shadows, and apples, which we frequently encounter in her works, represent concepts such as desire, guilt, power, and silence. Through these symbols, she makes visible both the individual’s inner conflicts and social responsibility. Themes such as the female body, consumer culture, and collective memory are explored in both personal and social contexts in Algül’s paintings. His representations of nature reflect the artist’s intellectual interest not only in the environment but also in time and transformation. Algül consciously combines different techniques (oil painting, engraving, mixed media) in his production process. His technical choices are shaped by the subject he depicts, and each material becomes a part of the narrative. Algül, who sees art not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a tool for questioning, remembering, and re-interpreting, invites the viewer to think beyond the visual experience.
