Canan Aydoğmuş

Canan Aydoğmuş (1972–Sivas)

A Painter Who Transposes Childhood Memories and Vanishing Anatolian Houses onto Canvas

Life;
Canan Aydoğmuş was born in Divriği in 1972. She completed her higher education at the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. Although she received professional training in the field of medicine, her interest in painting—nurtured since childhood—remained a significant part of her life.
She began to approach her artistic endeavors more systematically in 2011. From that time on, she took painting lessons from artist Mehmet Emin Özer at the Amedus Art Studio in Ankara and continued her work there. The artist focused particularly on the oil painting technique and an Impressionist approach to painting.

A notable aspect of Canan Aydoğmuş’s artistic career is the parallel pursuit of medicine and art. The observational skills gained through her medical training and her sensitivity to detail in painting are evident in her approach to subjects such as old houses, architectural surfaces, and objects of daily life.

Throughout her artistic career, Aydoğmuş has participated in 47 group exhibitions, including those associated with social responsibility projects. Twelve of these were national or international art events. Her participation in organizations such as the ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair, Art Contact Istanbul, IAAF Istanbul, and the Artist Istanbul Art Fair demonstrates that her artistic output is not limited to exhibitions based solely in Ankara.

The artist is a member of the United Painters and Sculptors Association (BRHD). She is also a board member of ANKÜSAD. Canan Aydoğmuş continues her work today, keeping alive—through her canvases—the nostalgic values of her childhood, the warmth of village and small-town houses on the verge of disappearing, traces of bygone lifestyles, and the small details of everyday life.

Artistic Vision;

At the core of Canan Aydoğmuş’s art lie memory, nostalgia, and a longing for a vanishing way of life.
In her pictorial world, the past is not merely a remembered span of time. Houses, objects, and architectural details from the past are transformed, through the artist's hand, into elements of cultural memory.
Subjects she particularly focuses on include old village and town houses, wooden doors, window frames, cracks in walls, bougainvillea, and objects used in the daily life of bygone eras.

For Canan Aydoğmuş, these images are not simply objects of visual interest; each one embodies lived experience.
A crack in a wall symbolizes the passage of time; an old door, the history of a house; a faded window frame, the lives once lived within; and bougainvillea, the life that persists amidst all this weathering.
Her approach also reflects a distinct critical stance against the alienation wrought by modern life. Aydoğmuş aims to evoke—through her paintings—the human warmth found in traditional neighborhood and small-town life, contrasting it with the social environment defined today as "modern life," which she perceives as increasingly distant and devoid of sincerity.

In this sense, her painting is an act of remembrance.
By transferring the nostalgic values of her childhood, the sincerity of village and town houses facing oblivion, and the small traces of life surviving from the past to the canvas, the artist mounts a visual resistance against their being forgotten.

Themes and Technical Characteristics;

In Canan Aydoğmuş’s paintings, subject matter and technique serve as two complementary elements.
The artist works primarily in oil on canvas. Her approach to painting is linked to the Impressionist style, characterized by the use of light, color, and free brushwork.

Village and Small-Town Houses
One of the most prominent themes in Canan Aydoğmuş’s art is old village and small-town houses.
The artist paints these houses not for the purpose of architectural documentation, but to reveal the traces of life they hold.
Weathered stone walls, facades with peeling plaster, old wooden doors, and faded window frames frequently appear in her paintings.
These houses stand as silent witnesses to the past.
In Aydoğmuş’s view, every old structure is a repository of memory, carrying the stories of the people who once lived within them.

Wall Cracks
One of the details the artist particularly highlights is cracks in the walls.
While many painters might view cracks merely as flaws on an architectural surface, for Aydoğmuş, they are fundamental elements that enrich the painting's narrative.
These cracks represent the passage of time, the process of aging, the lived experience, and the transience of human life.
For the artist, imperfect surfaces hold more stories than flawless, sterile modern structures.

Wooden Doors and Window Frames
Old wooden doors and window frames are also recurring motifs in Canan Aydoğmuş’s paintings.
Just as in art history, the door in Aydoğmuş’s work can be seen as a threshold between the past and the present.
Behind a closed door lies an unknown life, while beyond an open door lies a memory of the past.
Windows, meanwhile, establish a connection between the interior and the exterior.
Thus, the architectural details in the artist's work serve not merely as decorative elements, but as narrative ones. Vita Tins and Objects of Daily Life
One of the most distinctive details featured in Canan Aydoğmuş’s paintings is the Vita tin.
Once a commonplace element of daily life in Turkey, these tins have since evolved into nostalgic objects.
By capturing such objects on canvas, Aydoğmuş demonstrates that the small details of everyday life are also part of cultural memory.
Thus, an ordinary utilitarian object is transformed through art into a document that evokes the lifestyle of a bygone era.

Bougainvilleas and Nature
Bougainvilleas serve as a vital source of color and vitality in the artist’s paintings.
Spreading across the weathered wall of an old house, the bougainvillea represents the contrast between the erosive effects of time and the continuity of life.
Consequently, in Canan Aydoğmuş’s work, the bougainvillea is not merely a decorative flower; it is a symbol of life, renewal, and the continuity between the past and the present.

Impressionist Approach to Painting
Canan Aydoğmuş has gravitated toward an Impressionist approach in the painting studies she began with Mehmet Emin Özer in 2011.
This artistic perspective aligns perfectly with her subject matter.
The atmosphere of old houses, the way sunlight falls upon walls, the colors of flowers, and the shifting textures of architectural surfaces can all be conveyed more vividly and emotionally through Impressionist techniques.
In Aydoğmuş’s paintings, the impressions left by light, color, and the moment itself take precedence over photographic detail.

Major Works and Series;

In Canan Aydoğmuş’s artistic output, distinct thematic series stand out more prominently than individual titles of works.
These include:
• Old Village Houses
• Small-Town Houses
• Wooden Doors
• Old Windows and Window Frames
• Wall Cracks
• Houses with Bougainvillea
• Nostalgic Streets
• Vita Tins
• Vintage Household Objects
• Views of Anatolian Architecture
• Childhood Memories
• Scenes of Nostalgic Life
• Abandoned Houses
• Old Neighborhoods
The artist’s works, exhibited at Galeri Soyut over the years, include oil paintings on canvas in various dimensions, such as 25×25 cm, 40×40 cm, and 130×65 cm.
These varying sizes demonstrate that Aydoğmuş develops both small-scale, concentrated compositions and architectural narratives on larger surfaces.

Aydoğmuş’s repeated participation in the ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair over the years is a significant indicator of his sustained presence in the Ankara art scene. Similarly, regular participation in the March 14th Medicine Week events and exhibitions by doctor-painters—organized by the Ankara Chamber of Medicine—represents significant occasions where the artist's identities as both a physician and a painter intersect.

Social Responsibility Projects;

Social responsibility plays a significant role in Canan Aydoğmuş’s artistic career.
The artist’s exhibition history includes events with social causes, such as:
• Fundraising exhibitions for the Industrialists and Businessmen Foundation’s Women’s Platform Association
• Fundraising exhibitions for the Kiwanis Club
• Group exhibitions featuring women artists
• Events organized by the Ankara Chamber of Medicine
• Exhibitions marking International Women’s Day (March 8)
In this regard, Aydoğmuş upholds the view that art is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but also a vehicle for social solidarity.

Position in the History of Turkish Painting;

Canan Aydoğmuş can be considered one of the painters in contemporary Turkish art who has developed a unique narrative style centered on nostalgic Anatolian life, traditional village and town houses, and the memory of everyday existence.
Her paintings focus on the small details of life rather than major historical events.
This approach aligns with the concept of "memory painting"—a significant current within contemporary Turkish art.
By making old doors, windows, cracked walls, "Vita" tins, and bougainvillea the subjects of her work, the artist transforms ordinary, everyday objects into vessels of cultural and emotional memory.

In this context, Aydoğmuş’s art embodies two fundamental contrasts:
The old versus the new, and the contrast between sincerity and the detachment inherent in modern life.
Rather than idealizing the village and town life of the past, the artist emphasizes the human warmth embodied in those ways of living.
Conversely, she draws attention to the nature of modern life, which tends to become increasingly anonymous and drives individuals apart. Therefore, Aydoğmuş’s painting can be viewed not merely as nostalgic, but also as a silent critique aimed at preserving cultural memory.
The fact that the artist’s painting career developed after his medical education is another characteristic that sets him apart within the Turkish art scene.
Balancing his professional career with his artistic practice, Aydoğmuş systematized his painting work through regular training starting in 2011 and has subsequently exhibited his art at numerous national and international events.
