Who was Arslan Gündaş? (1914 – 2002)
Arslan Gündaş (1914-2002) is one of the painters in the Republican era of Turkish painting who interpreted naive tendencies with an original expression, known for his dreamlike atmospheres, two-dimensional compositions, and strong sense of color. Following a path independent of academic art circles, the artist interpreted figures, nature, and daily life with his own unique fantastic perspective; he is among the important names of Turkish naive painting.
His Life:
Arslan Gündaş was born in İzmir in 1914. Although he was interested in painting from his childhood, his first career choice was the military. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1935. He continued his interest in art during his military career.
After completing his education at the Military Academy in 1953, Gündaş trained at the US Infantry School in 1954. He later studied health administration at the University of Chicago. He left the army in 1958 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. After working as a hospital administrator in the United States for two years, he returned to Türkiye.
For many years, he served as the director of Hacettepe Children’s Hospital in Ankara. He also worked as a lecturer at the School of Health Administration and retired in 1979.
The artist, whose relationship with painting dates back to his childhood, focused on his painting professionally after 1938. In his own words, the two names that opened “the true doors of the world of painting” to him were Eşref Üren and Cemal Bingöl, important artists of the Republican era. He took private lessons from these two artists and developed his personal style under their guidance.
He participated in various group exhibitions, primarily the State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions. His works were accepted at the DYO Exhibitions. He managed to attract the attention of art circles with his solo exhibition in 1968. In 1973, he won the Achievement Award at the 34th State Painting and Sculpture Exhibition.
The artist, who was interested in painting in particular, as well as music and literature, continued his creative work until the end of his life. He passed away in 2002.
Artistic Approach;
Arslan Gündaş, while embracing a naive artistic approach, has created a unique world in his works that also carries fantastic and surreal connotations. His paintings contain poetic compositions where the boundaries between reality and dream are blurred, featuring figures floating in space and imaginary spaces. Rejecting the rules of perspective, the artist has developed a unique expression through two-dimensional surface arrangements and decorative color relationships.
Critics note the influence of İhsan Cemal Karaburçak in his early works, but especially after the 1960s, Arslan Gündaş achieved a completely personal style.
