President of National Palaces Dr. about the museum, which is also the only representative of Ottoman palace painting. Yasin Yıldız said, "In January 2021, this painting museum met with art lovers like its counterparts in the world. In 3 years, the National Palaces Painting Museum hosted around 1 million visitors. This is an extremely pleasing development for such a thematic museum."
The National Palaces Painting Museum was built by Sultan Abdülmecid in 1856 as the 'Headline's Office'. Sultan Abdülaziz stayed in the flat first. Karabet Balyan was the construction foreman of the building, and Es-Seyyid Ali Şahin Bey was the building supervisor. The furnishing of the flat was done by French Charles Sechan, decorator of Sultan Abdülmecid. The Crown Prince's Office started to serve as the Painting Museum on March 22, 2014, after the restoration of its first section. In 2017, the restoration of the second, larger part of the museum began. The Painting Museum, which reopened its doors to art lovers after 4 years of work, gained a unique quality in its field with its original restoration, meticulous display and furnishing in 2021. National Palaces Painting Museum, which has the richest painting collection in Turkey, continues to be at the center of cultural and artistic life with the number of visitors increasing every year. The Painting Museum, which was expanded with new sections and its collection enriched on January 15, 2021, started its 3rd year with a visitor record. The museum, which has been a popular destination for art lovers in Istanbul since the day it opened, has hosted approximately 1 million visitors in 3 years. The Museum of Painting, where nearly 600 works are exhibited in 34 different sections, is also preparing to provide education services to art lovers with children's workshops and affiliated art galleries this year.
THE LARGEST ORIENTALIST PAINTING IS EXHIBITED IN THE MUSEUM
The only representative of Ottoman palace painting, the National Palaces Painting Museum houses Felix-Auguste Clement's work, known to the public as 'Hunting in the Desert'. It was stated that the original name of the 35 square meter painting was 'Prince Halim's Gazelle Hunt in the Gatah Desert: Hound Share'. The painting, dated 1865, was transferred from Said Halim Pasha Mansion to the Painting Museum in a successful operation in 2019. The work, which contains clues about Ottoman-Egyptian relations, is Turkey's largest orientalist painting.
"IN 3 YEARS, NATIONAL PALACES PAINTING MUSEUM HOSTED AROUND 1 MILLION VISITORS"
Stating that the National Palaces Painting Museum is celebrating its 3rd anniversary these days, National Palaces President Dr. Yasin Yıldız said, "Actually, the basic idea that creates the National Palaces Painting Museum is to bring together the Ottoman Palace painting collection, which was created in the Ottoman palaces, especially in the 19th century, to which the National Palaces are the custodian, around a theme. With this idea, the Crown Prince of the Dolmabahçe Palace, which we are currently in, The apartment has undergone a major restoration process since the 2010s. It was a section that had been closed for a long time in previous years. We are talking about a detached palace with approximately 60 rooms. Following these restoration works, an exhibition was opened here in 2014. Approximately 8 rooms of the building contain these paintings. We showed a small collection for promotional purposes. Then, of course, the restoration work continued. In January 2021, this painting museum was introduced to art lovers, like its counterparts in the world, by our President in January 2021. As we stated in the introduction, our museum is now celebrating its 3rd anniversary. And these 3 years The National Palaces Painting Museum hosted around 1 million visitors. This is an extremely pleasing development for such a thematic museum. Approximately 500 thousand of these visitors took place in 2022. "Because 2021 was a year in which the effects of the pandemic were still felt in our country," he said.
"IN OUR MUSEUM, WE SEE MANY PAINTINGS OF SELIM III, MAHMUD II, AND THE SULTANS OF THE TANZIMAT PERIOD"
Stating that there are approximately 600 works selected from the Ottoman Palace collections in the museum, Yıldız said, "Our visitors who come here are very familiar with some of these paintings. We host extremely important paintings that are included in various books, publications and school curricula. At this point, especially from the 16th century There are paintings of sultans made by painters of sultans, and we are in that hall right now. Especially in the 19th century, after the Tanzimat Period, and even before the Tanzimat Period, the Ottoman sultans' interest in painting, especially paintings, increased, starting with Selim III and Mahmud II. At this point, we know that Sultan Abdülmecid personally posed for the painters and had his paintings made. In this museum, we see many paintings of the sultans of the Tanzimat Period after Selim III and Mahmud II. Of course, with Sultan Abdülaziz, Ottoman painting entered a new phase. At this point, especially Şeker Ahmed Pasha, they seriously trained the Ottoman bureaucracy in the field of painting at that time. Again, with their efforts, the painting collection of the 19th century Ottoman Palace began to be formed, especially with the paintings brought from Europe from the Goupil Gallery. In the later stages of this, our collection developed seriously as the Ottoman officers, especially those trained in military schools, such as the generations of adjutant painters and military painters, showed interest in painting and encouraged it in their palaces. There are around 3 thousand paintings in total in the National Palaces inventory. As I said, 600 of the most outstanding examples of these paintings are here. Others are exhibited within the palace furnishings in our Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Yıldız and other palaces. There are 34 rooms and halls where we exhibit. In addition, we exhibit in approximately 42 venues including corridors. "Approximately 600 works meet their visitors at the National Palaces Painting Museum," he said.
